Chris Spalding, who runs the "modeller's nook" model shop in Belfast, organised a modelling show today, which was held in
the Royal Ulster Rifles Museum in Waring Street, in Belfast city centre.

Through the good offices of Pat, we were invited to have a table there, to show off some of our work, and to publicise D3. (we could not, in fairness,
canvass for members, as there is Northern Ireland branch of IPMS (UK)).

So we displayed some of our work, showing a wide variety of genres. There were models from Gerry Hanlon (his four excellent aircraft dioramas, of
the Paddy Finucane Spitfire, a Bf 110, a Bf 109 of Adolf Galland, and a Lancaster), from Sean Mullarkey (six Modern Wheels models), from Sean Walsh
(his prizewinning Nationalist Chinese Mustang), from Pat McGrath (his two Orc busts and his 2012 "best of show" burnt out Sherman), from Don Whittaker
(two DC3's, two Boeing 737 and a B-50, as well as a diminutive Graf Zeppelin), together with my small display of seven Bf 109's in 1/72nd, showing the
evolution of this iconic fighter from prototype in 1935 to Bf 109 K in 1945.

We also had leaflets for D3 and explanatory leaflets about the club, which were handed to all passers-by. In addition, this event was the first outing of the
new D3 poster, fresh from the printers (many thanks to Ken for the design). We took the opportunity to invite all present to D3, noting that many of the
models on show on other display tables would be warmly welcome in the Irish Nationals. (Some had already gained prizes at IMSS recently and one had
won a gold medal at Telford last year as well.)

The show had a number of tables, showing models, well as a single trader's table near the entrance, for the Modelling Nook. There was also a raffle towards
the end of the day, for vouchers to be used in the shop. Chris kindly opened the actual shop up to punters, which resulted in a healthy purchase by Pat and
a "value for money" purchase by Sean (who had won third prize in the raffle).

Here are some general views of the room during the day (the tables were placed amongst the - very interesting - static exhibits about the history of the Irish
Rifles regiments:-

It is very important that we are represented at shows such as this, in order to build up our profile and specifically to promote the Irish Nationals
Many thanks to Gerry, Don, Pat and Sean for making the journey up and giving of your time!

Philip

I will include a selection of the models on show on other tables in later posts (tomorrow!).

It was a great show and, as you can see from the pictures, very small. Chris Spalding was testing the waters this year to see how viable a larger show with a competition might work, something which I’d happily support. It would mean four competitions per year on the island to enjoy and four large social gatherings for modellers as well.

In order to manage the small size this year Chris kept the show as invite-only which is why the show wasn’t heavily publicised on the net or here. It was great for IPMS Ireland to be invited along and the committee decided to represent the club personally, which makes a change from long meetings. :P

We were very well received and there was a lot of interest in our Nationals. The show should be on again next year with the possibility of a larger venue. Either way we’d be happy to go back.

As Philip said I was lucky enough to win 3rd prize in the raffle, £15 towards a kit which I used to get a 1/35 scale Trumpeter M1127 Stryker for a bargain. :>

Looks like it was a great show. Nice venue too. An annual show in Belfast would be a fantastic idea.

Yes it would and Chris was very pleased by the response yesterday and is planning to make it bigger and better next year. This will mean moving from the Museum which is really too small for anything bigger

Here are my photos on FLICKR

It was quite nice actually not to be involved in a competition and just make your way around the tables and chat to other modellers most of whom said they would travel down to our show in September.

For anyone visiting Belfast the museum is well worth a visit and Gavin the Caretaker? (Is that the proper word?) is only too happy to guide people around.

Wish I could have attended but I was at Star Trek Live in London. Hopefully next year Chris will make it to a bigger venue! You see we can be civilised up here :)

I can sympathise with Pat - the lack of seating was a bit trying after about 4 hours standing around....I ended up in the hallway where there were a couple of chairs, and Don and I had a great chat about Venice (and Berlin before and after the Wall came down).. I only roused myself a half hour later when the raffle came along, to see Sean W win a prize.

Still, it was a great show. Many thanks to Chris for the initiative in organising it - he was a great host. The quality of the models on show was very high, and it was a great opportunity to meet up with the modelling guys from the North. (Yes, Liam, I know, ....I half expected to see you there, as there were a couple of Star Trek models, all lit up.....)

Overall, a very good day, and - like Pat - I would be more than happy to go up again next year.

The Nook

Hi guys ,

Philip,Thank you for a great review but its really the people that attend that makes a show what it is .It was fantastic having you fellas at the show and putting on an excellent display ,I think you all done your club proud . You all have my many thanks for helping to make a great day :-)

As mentioned ,I am already working in the background on doing a bigger better show ,this will be held at a different venue as the museum couldn't handle much more than we had on Sunday ! It will also include a competition (open to everyone ) But as I'm sure you are aware it takes a bit of organizing ,so it will take a while to put together ... I will keep you posted tho .

Oh yes ...Pat ..there will be more seating next time !! (My bad)

Chris.

It looks like that was a good day out for all concerned and in a very unique venue as well.
Some very good models on display judging by the photos with the Enterprise looking very impressive, was it the
big 1/350 scale one Pat?

Gosh Vinny I don't know I find it hard to tell scale in Scifi models without a reference

Well, if the overall length was about 2 and a half foot then it would be the 1/350 Polar Lights Kit but if it was about
the 16-18 inch mark it is probably the 1/600 Revell Kit( Yeah I know....it's sci-fi so scale is irrelevent either way :D )

Judging by the size of the power strip in the bottom right hand corner I'd go with 1/600 based on Vincent's descriptions?
