I suppose its about timeI get my finger out and get started in this fine GB. So in the 9 years between the end of WW2 and the Korean War the world was awash with surplus jeeps both new and unused. According to Karl Martin's book ,the Bible on Irish Army vehicles, the Army were talked out of buying any at all and instead invested the taxpayers hard earned in 10 new CJ-3A's and later the more improved CJ-3B. These lasted until the 1960's Over 350,000 CJ (Civilian Jeep) series CJ-2A,3A and CJ-5A were produced. The 2A&3A were larger versions of the war-time model and the 3B & 5A were larger still, featuring the new Hurricane engine. This required a larger bonnet hence "Hi-Hat Jeep''. The 5A being a civilian version of the M38A1. ![]() These Jeeps were built or assembled in over 20 counties, Mahindra in India made nearly 900,000 and Mitsubishi in Japan over 200,000. Now there is a kit of almost every Jeep variant from the Bantam to the MUTT in 1/35th, that is unless you want a CJ-3B. The only way there ,is to either post-date a Jeep kit, make it larger, wider and rebuild the bonnet or take the only kit of the Japanese version, the J20 and pre-date it by making it smaller. So the obligatory box and sprue shots. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Basically I am trying to find the differences between the Mitsubishi J20 and the Willys CJ-3A and either add them or remove them and hopefully an Irsh Army Jeep will emerge, something I have wanted for some years. regards Edited by ghengismccann, Jun 3 2014, 10:36 PM.

"You never do anything easy" Sean sadly only too true, caused by very advanced, possibly terminal AMS. I tried a few times to go OOB but I just couldn't do it. Sad really maybe we should start a Charity Foundation. have a flag day, involve Bono maybe. Anyho a morning spent working out what needs doing. The Mitsubishi J20 is clearly longer and wider ![]() ![]() Measured against a 1/35th scale drawing shows some changes required. ![]() So far I have identified; Cut out 4 mm from the chassis and frame and re-glue. Re-shape the rear wheel arches. Reshape the front mud-guards Replace the split rear tailgate with a drop-down Jeep version Put the "pinched" waist back in by the front seats Add the WILLYS badges Build and fit a new Dashboard. replace the front and rear bumpers with flat-bar types Retrofit the steering column and wheel Add a Jeep spare wheel bracket and fuel can holder Reshape the windscreen and add vacuum wipers/piping. Add windscreen rests and clips to bonnet Remove the side-lighting system and back date to Willys type Add the lip on the body shell. and finally the major jobs. The wheels are 16" and the tires are much slimmer so I need new wheels. And this one will take a minute so stay with me here. Originally the Jeeps where built with US left hand drive, as you would expect. The Irish Army imported them as sold/standard and drove the with left -hand drive. However the Japanese who also drive on the left built theirs with right-hand drive. So I have to swap the tool box under the passenger seat and the fuel tank under the drivers seats and make good the floor and then fill in the filler cap and move it to the opposite side of the chassis. So I think I may need these from the stack ![]() regards |

So far the tool box has been cut out and the center console reshaped as have the rear wheel arches The filler cap has been moved and the old one filled in. Also the dash has been started, the pinched waist and edging strip completed. The white thing is the spare wheel bracket. You may also notice the thin green line at the rear. This is the filler need to plug the small gap after I fed it through the scroll saw and rejoined it after taking off the 4 mm I think it looks about right. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hpefully more after the week-end.

"more after the weekend" ??? Surely you could finish this by tomorrow, Paddy, and not leave us waiting for a whole two days to see the job done........ Philip (best of luck with this - however long it takes, there's a suitable competition class or two awaiting on September 27th (and a new Trophy - the IPMS Ireland Non-Aviation Trophy, which is described in the rules as being for any Irish themed non-aviation subject. This trophy - but not the competition classes - is exclusively for IPMS Ireland members, of which you are an honoured member) |

Bloody Hell Paddy, You never take the easy option. But if you want realism this is the price that you have to pay! Bloody good build, following this as I am the others with great interest. But Stick & String definitely rule O.K. Cheers Joe M |

Moving swiftly along (Sorry Philip but not that swiftly)![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The letters for the brand name appear a bit too big to my eye now.I thought I had some smaller brass but it looks like I put them"somewhere safe" The Slaters 2/3mm ones where the only ones close to the original font The wheel is the only one I can find big enough and with a slim tyre.It comes from a Tamiya GAZ 66 However I may need to rework the hubs and bolts a fair bit to look the part. next chopping a lump out of the chassis. regards

Thank you. Evergreen strip pulled between two fingers to put a slight curl in it, then glued and pressed bit by bit. Without Evergreen and Plastruct I would have to give this hobby up. regards

That is absoloutely stellar work- the 'WILLYS' emblem in styrene is just amazing- how did you manage to get it cut so finely and precisely? The contouring work is also really great- you can see the shape really starting to come alive now- love the dashboard and the rear door- just class! |

I shortened the frame and replaced the rear sections.![]() Still working out the wheels. ![]() The one on the left is the kit wheel, correct hub, right side but too fat for a 1950's wheel. The middle is a standard Italerai Jeep wheel and the right one is the GAZ, right size, right thickness but the hub needs work.I will work something out. Just tacked on the wheels and body for effect. ![]() ![]() ![]() Must do something about that bloody S Karl Thanks for the kind words.I have a collection of letters, brass, plastic, resin, collected over the years. These are Slaters 2/3mm white plastic any railway model shop should have some or check their web site,if not I can send you a packet. Liam Nice idea.Once a few years ago, late at night, upon licensed premises, with drink taken,Roy Kinsella and I talked about setting up a company to produce Irish themed resin kits, conversions and figure kits . Crossleys, various wartime and post war A/Cars, modern Irish Defense Force figures in 1/35th. That sort of thing. Luckily we sobered up regards
