Folks As many of you will be aware, IPMS Ireland has been at this very good show for a number of years now - promoting the club with our brethren up North. Last year, we had a very successful stand, where members of our club displayed their work. (You can see details, and photos, of this elsewhere on the forum - and in the club's last newsletter.) The Open Day/Days are held in the Ulster Aviation Society's premises at Long Kesh, near Lurgan, which was a wartime airfield before it was used for other purposes. The UAS has two hangers from that time, chock-full of interesting aviation artifacts, including a number of restored planes. The Open Days provide a full view of the hangers, as well as fly-in's by various military aircraft, and also many exhibits of military vehicles in the grounds. Some of us from IPMS Ireland were planning to go there again on Sunday 24th August. However, I have just heard bad news from UAS, via their fb feed. This is what it says:- "The Committee of the Ulster Aviation Society is greatly disappointed at having to announce the cancellation of its planned Open Days event due to take place over the weekend 23/24th August. The cancellation stems directly from the fact that permission to hold the event has not been forthcoming from the government. Society Chairman, Ray Burrows said, "The whole UAS Committee are devastated and at a loss to understand why permission has been withheld this year, considering this year's event was being planned on the back of very successful Open Day events held over previous years. Planning for this year's event started in October '13 and it would be true to say, was shaping up to be our biggest and best yet. We held off taking this decision as long as possible, but there obviously comes a time when it is impossible to continue - sadly we have reached that point in time. We very much hope that the public and all those who had arranged to participate, especially the other charities involved, will appreciate the Society's position and we look forward to their continued and valued support in the future. Against this tremendous setback Mr Burrows added, Society membership is continuing to grow as is our aviation collection and we will continue to give the public and schools a unique visitor experience. We shall also continue to work with everyone involved to ensure the continued success not only of the UAS but also of the Maze, Long Kesh site." So, unfortunately, we will not be there again this year, if this event is now without hope. Which is a pity, as this is a great opportunity to talk about what unites us - our interest in modelling, aviation and military history. Kinda ironic, given the commemorations on a number of TV channels tonight about the Great War.... Philip Edited by Prenton, Aug 4 2014, 09:23 PM.
