Hi Everyone.

I’m just back from a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When I was there I visited the IPMS Rio show and I entered their competition. Before any of you ask, No I didn’t go to Brazil just to visit the show.

I brought 4 models with me in my hand luggage. I had no problem bring them and none of them were broken.

The show was in a large tennis club and was about 1.5 time the size of our one. It was over 2 days. There was a French theme this year, so there was 10 extra awards because of that. I have to say everyone was very friendly and helpful. I didn’t get to spend too much time there, but I did have a good time. I bought 3 sets of decals and I won a kit in a raffle. I so got 3rd place for my 1/144 Eurofighter.

You can have a look in the Gallery on http://aprj.com.br/

I’ll split the photos in to 5 batches.

Regards

Ken

Hi All

Thank you.The standard was high at the show. And there was bigger mix of models. I thought the cars were really cool. The finish on some of them was just great.

The paper splitting the class was a good idea. Not sure if it was tape or paper. They did not give medal for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. That you got was a clear disk, they put it beside your model. I thought it was a good idea. You can see them in some of the photo.

Not sure we will ever have an Official IPMS Ireland trip to Rio. The flights can cost about €1000. It would be a nice idea. I think I will try and go again next year if I can.

The train set was tiny. I have no Idea if scale, but to give you an Idea of the size the layout was about 10cm x 20cm. It was not moving but it looked like it could.

Anyway the last two lots of photos.

Yes, that paper separation tape (?) is a good idea. In our case, as the table coverings are white, we could use coloured tape.....Of course, that assumes that we have spare space on the competition tables. Maybe that might be possible at Modelling Munster, but we will have to see if it is possible at D3. As it is, we have decided to relocate the kitswop into the smaller room, where the branch tables were last year, in order to provide more space for the competition in the main (daylight lit) room. While that gives us more space to play with for the competition, it does mean that club tables are just that - probably one table per chapter or branch.....

Once I know more details about potential guests there in the club room, I will be able to allocate space to the Mid West branch and the Dublin Chapter - depends on how many guests are coming. I have given until a fortnight from now to get confirmations on that, then will start to allocate space......

Meanwhile, Pat (as Competition Secretary) will be thinking about the layout for the competition area, and how much space we need for each of the 31 competition classes!!!.

[We will have somewhat less space than there was in Rio. But then, the population of Ireland is c. 3.5 million, while the population of Brazil is 203 million, and the population of Dublin is c. 1.2 million, while that of Rio alone is over 6.4 million.....]

A bit OT, nevertheless:
I think - and I don't want to go into any argument here - that a few strips of 10mm, even 20mm, green masking paper tape will not take too much of space. It could be cut and shaped to surround all the model in particular class and it costs around 3.50 per 25mtr roll. It would not only make the whole thing more organised, but judging much easier too, I remember that we have discovered another model or two belonging to 'our' class hiding between other class models after judging was done and we had to start again.

Hi Ken,
Great photos and congratulations. Are those Fouga Magister 's yours by any chane? One is an IAC but the other is French?

Rio sounds like a god location for a modelling event, R1 instead of D2 ! :P

Hi Joe.

I was going to bring the Mount Fuji F-15 with me, but I had to change my plans. I entered my 1/48 Irish Fouga, 1/144 Hurricane, 1/144 Harrier and 1/144 Eurofighter.

Brian, only the Irish Fouga was mine, the other Fouga is Brazilian Air Force. I wanted to build one in that colours.

R3 here we come. :)
