I have the results on lots of bits of paper, and a computer spreadsheet that is on a small tablet type device, all now sitting in bags and boxes in the boot of the car. Give me a day or two to work it all out, link the two devices etc, and I will arrange to have the full list of winners etc. posted up on the website.

The one thing that I do know is that the 1/35th scale Sci-Fi model of "Ramora" deservedly won the Best of Show. The "ship/airship" was a resin kit, very well painted and weathered, supplemented by a number of figures and a LOT of scratchbuilt detail and stoage! Here is the "official" photo, taken by Ben Sollis for the club. (I'm sure there will be lots more photos of it - this one sure is a cracker!)

Good show and it's nice to see that the quality of stuff on display is getting better every year. Well done to all and big thanks to all those who popped in for the day, for the weekend, with or without models
...and side notice: fingers out guys it's only 12 months to go! :P

A small selection of mine mix of amateur-ish shots from the event:

So - some of my photos of D3.

Before I put up some shots of the models on the competition table, it's only right that I show some others, which
are rarely exhibited on the forum, that show other aspects of the show.

I stayed overnight on the Saturday in the Pearse Hotel, and - as luck would have it - I ended up in a room with a view:-

Posted Image

The show requires lots of volunteers. Here is one of those volunteers, Ray Flynn (at a quiet moment) on the door.
(We had about 200 paying customers, in addition to the kids who got in free, and all the IPMS members, who also got in free).

Posted Image

Then there were the traders, who populated the trading room, and hopefully did some good business:-

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

(I didn't get shots of Chris Spalding of the Modellers' Nook, nor of Diarmuid Byrne, of Irish Transport Books and Kits,
but it's only right to list them here, along with Marks, Walshie, Jacek, Radu (and Aaron).

Next shots will be of the club displays, which were in the other room.

In the back room, as well as the kitswop, there were the club displays. The Midwest branch and the Dublin Chapter had each large displays.

Then of course, there was Michael from Sligo:-

Posted Image

On the Midwest table, there were a number of very interesting displays, with accompanying text, by Alan

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

As well as a more diverse assembly of the work of the branch.

Posted Image

Posted Image

And of course, there was the new branch nameplate:-

Posted Image

Over on the Dublin Chapter table, there were displays of models, including a significant number of WW1 kits (mainly by Mr Sticks and Strings himself).

Posted Image

Vincent Murphy also provided some IAC kits, including a "what-if" (can you guess which one it is??)

Posted Image

And there were contributions from other members as well.

Posted Image

Posted Image

The result was that the judges awarded the Dublin Chapter the Trophy for the best Club display to the whole table - take a bow, guys!

And to finish this post, here is Joe, manning the table at some stage during the weekend, and explaining that it is really easy to rig biplanes, yes, really, it is....

Posted Image

Next post (later today) will give some "atmosphere" shots, of the competition room and the people milling about.

I always reckon that most of the photos of model shows that you see on various fora just show the models in the competitions. While valuable, and informative,
they rarely evoke the atmosphere that you can detect at the shows themselves. D3 was no different - there was a palpable "buzz" at the event, especially from
about noon on Sunday, when the folks were gathering to look at the competition models (by then adorned with their "gold" "Silver" Bronze" and "Commended" cards
from the previous evening's judging), and awaited the awards ceremony at 3. Mixed among them, I am glad to say, were many members of the wider public, who
came to see the models (and indeed vote for the Peoples' Choice).

I took the bulk of these shots earlier on Sunday morning, when those present were generally modellers. Readers may recognize themselves in some of these photos.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Meanwhile, on a table nearby, the medals and trophies for the competition were being assembled, just like a regiment on display (while Pat and Sean worked behind, finalising the winners' list)

Posted Image

And that is what I will focus on in the next set of photos, the prizegiving.

Towards 3 pm, Pat called for order, and the awards ceremony began. Assisted by Alan, our Chairman
Gerry Hanlon handed out the various prizes, whether models, commendation certificates or trophies, to
those modellers who had come through the competition. There was a rapt audience for the prizegiving:-

Posted Image

I have here a short selection of photos of skilled modellers receiving their awards (I have lots more
photographs, but some are of the juniors (which of course I will not publish, as this is a public forum
and I haven't permission), while others are of recipients who just moved too fast to get their medals
and defeated me in getting in focus shots.)

Pride of place goes, of course, to Chris Babes, for the Best of Show Award for his sci-fi Ramora ship.

Posted Image

Then there was Roy Kinsella, who is represented here by just one photograph (though he appeared
at the podium a number of times, in a variety of modelling genres) Congrats Roy!

Posted Image

Don Whittaker, for his DC-3 (that he had to be persuaded to enter). Bet you are glad now that
you took Joe's advice, Don!

Posted Image

Maurice Mallen, for his wonderful Instrument Panels in 1/4th scale

Posted Image

Dermot Moriarty, our jet specialist

Posted Image

Joe Moran

Posted Image

Gerry Doyle (yes, he's moving fast!)

Posted Image

and Colin Cochrane

Posted Image

I did miss out a number of folks from these photos, including Chris McDowell, Ciaran McMullen, Filip Servit, Davy Coyne and Chris
Spalding, all of whom won multiple medals.

Overall, there was a total of 199 entries in the competition, placed in by 58 individual modellers.

OK then....

Here are a series of posts with the various models that I photographed.

The first set, given the Best of Show, is a series of photographs of the Remora ship that was awarded that accolade, followed by some of the other sci-fi entries.

Pretty impressive modelling, I think you will agree.

Overall, there were eight sci-fi entries, which I am sure you will agree is a reasonable number.....Some of the other sci-fi entries:-

Then, rather out of the normal order, I have here a number of the entries from the two figure figure categories in the competition.

In the smaller scale, there were three entries. Here are two of them:-

Posted Image

Posted Image
(love the way the snow is melting down the plinth...)

In the larger scale, there were 16 entries. Here are 12 of them:-

and my favourite in this class, the Navy Seal bust, (which is by Karl Hoy, and only got a silver, being beaten to the gold by Philip
Donnelly's 42nd Highlander, which you can see immediately above):-

Posted Image

There were no less than three versions of Michael Collins:-

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

(Was this something to do with the fact that George Hook spoke at Beal Na Blath this year...???)

(The last one, in my opinion, was the best of the three, but none of them won any prizes.....)

There were a number of civilian vehicles entered (a total of nine), and Chris Spalding won both gold and silver, with his Honda RCV 211 and
his Honda RC 166, respectively, followed by John Hamilton with his Porsche that garnered the bronze medal.

Here is a general photo of the table in question, showing the various winners:-

Posted Image

The two ship categories were rather thinly supported, with only two entries in each category. The Competition Secretary wisely amalgamated them
into one, and the result was that Michael Markiewicz won the gold with this fine ship, HMS Borage:-

Posted Image

He was also the proud recipient of the "Best Finish" trophy, sponsored by the Mad Clown Design Industry (aka FiSe)

The silver went to Roy Kinsella, for LE Ciara:-

Posted Image

...which also won the IPMS Ireland Non-Aviation Trophy, for the best Irish themed non-aviation subject by a member of IPMS Ireland.

The bronze went to Barry Spencer, for his French Frigate:-

Posted Image

While we are on nautical theme, the prizes in the new competition category - for card / paper models - all went to ships. Michael Markiewicz won the gold for
his 1/200 Variag (which I did not take photo of, regrettably - sorry Michael!). (hopefully somebody else has a photo of it - you can see the end of it poking out to the left in the photo below)

It also was the choice of the People, winning the People's Choice Trophy.

Krzysztof Golec won two silvers in the same class for these two:-

Now.. on to some aircraft.

What was somewhat surprising this year was the significant number of entries in the largest aircraft class (A11 - military, jets/props 1/24 - 1/47).
There were 16 entries in this category.

The gold was won by Gerry Doyle, with his Thunderjet:-

Posted Image

Other entries included a number of Bf 109G's, mainly coming from the Revell kit issued a short time back.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

as well as some Great War examples:-

Posted Image

Posted Image

... and a rather fetching Mustang:-

The civil aircraft category was more sparsely populated than in previous Nationals, with only nine entries, spread out among the two classes.

Here are a few that caught my eye:-

Don Whittaker came out on top in this class, with his DC-3. I missed a shot of it at the show (sorry, Don), but others have posted shots of this classic airliner.
