My entry is the only 1:48 scale kit of Tiger Moth available - to my knowledge anyway - produced by Czech manufacturer Smer for the last 40 or so years and originally produced by Aurora in the 50's/?/
I have decided to go with this aircraft as many Irish pilots, both military and club members were flying those machines in the various air-battling movies shoot in Ireland in the 60s and 70s. It wasn't always smooth ride and there were some casualties as well, just off the Wicklow pier IAC pilot and 3 members of staff have been killed in mid air collision while filming some air scenes for 'Zeppelin' movie.

Anyway, this Tiger Moth has only handful of parts, very rough on the edges, with lovely details, like RAF roundels and serial number stamped on the surface. The plastic is nice and soft and thick, no interior details and while looking at the scale drawings of the Tiger Moth, the kit parts look like taken from different aircraft.

So, the goals are:
- get rid of all the raise details
- reshape the fuselage, wings, rudder, elevators
- scratchbuild interior details - only one cockpit is needed
- reshape and rework the engine cover
- detail-up the whole lot according to reference photos
- get the lozenge decals done
- hopefully build it on time

Will be fun

That's the plan:

Now, if you don't hear from me for a while, that's because I am busy sanding, cutting, gluing, sanding, filling, sanding...did I mention sanding?

You've certainly got your work cut out for you with this Filip!. I like the way the roundels and serial numbers are moulded onto the plastic- thats something I've never seen before in an aircraft kit. The color scheme is really eye catching looking. Great stuff!

"During the 1960s, Ireland became a centre for film productions, especially for aviation related projects. Air Corps officers found themselves as flying extras in films such as "The Blue Max" (1965), "My Darling Lily" (1967), and "The Red Baron" (1970) with Baldonnel itself hosting several scenes. "

Hi Filip,,
I bought a job lot of models last year and there was a box with the Smer DH 82 in with them. Unfortunately there was only one wing in the box and some other small bits were missing. Decal sheet and instruction were included. As I am never going to build it or even try and build it do you want it? if so let me know and I'll stick it in the post to you.
Cheers

Cheers, although, there are no small bits in that kit, Joe...
I am currently sanding and correcting the shape of the wings, it's not that bad, but there's a lot of sand dust all over the place. As for the offer, the best place for that kit is - wait for it - in the bin

Only one photo as a proof that I am not talking rubbish and that I am really trying to do some modelling.

Posted Image

- Wings are pretty much in shape and dihedral of the lower wing adjusted as well, although they need to be tidy-up a bit and then all the details added onto them
- This can not be said about the engine cowling, on which a lot of work is still ahead of me in form of sanding and filling
- Seat is leftover taken from Special Hobby Miles Magister kit
- Fuselage halves had been glued together, then cut lengthwise and 1 mm taken from the cut, to lower the height of the fuselage
- Rudder and elevators are done from plastic card. I thought it will be much quicker and simpler to do it this way than trying to re-shape and thin original kit parts. Elevators are only cut out and need to be shaped properly.

That's it for now, if I'll be lucky, I might get these parts finished this week.

Well, I am very busy lately and having not too much of time and mental strength to do much of modelling, nevertheless, there is a bit of progress to report:

- Interior is getting nearer and nearer to painting stages. I am not too worried about the exact replication of the dash instruments, levers and so on, close enough is good enough for me:

- Decals getting ready to be sent off as well, just the fuselage part has to be done and then I will have to root through my stash to see what else I should include on the sheet, before clicking 'send':

I think, that I am, officially, pulling out.
Interior is waiting to be painted so the fuselage could be closed afterwards and more filling and adjusting done, but, currently, I am just too busy all the time to do any modelling at all.
I am hoping to have this one done for the Nationals, if everything works out.

Well, just pulled this one out only yesterday to see what has to be done and what has been done... Then went online only to see that Special Hobby are preparing brand new kit of Tiger Moth in 1:48 scale.
That means only one thing: Bye-bye Smer. I'll wait and get the new kit instead, floggin' the dead horse and all that...

Hey hey Filip you pull the topic up to knock it back down.
:bat:
I thought we were going to see some more great sows ear /silk purse stuff with this . Any gobshite can buy the special hobby kit and build it. You are better than that, get the finger out and stop finding reasons not to finish it.

And I mean that in the nicest possible way... :zip:

Life is too short to waste it on some bits of plastic, which don't even look like they supposed to look like. It doesn't look that bad on the photos, but I have rechecked the fuselage, there's considerable difference between both sides. The door on one side is totally different shape and size to the one on the other, sits much higher too.
Then I am stuck with the wing fuselage tank, simply don't know how to do it, finely corrugated metal, bent into shape. The rest of it could be scratched, modified, re-modified, re-shaped, ribs added thanks to HGV stuff.......but why?
I have the lozenge pyjama ready in the PC and that can be used on the SH kit, once out.
