Good news! As a result of an initiative of the National Committee of IPMS Ireland, there will now be a new special trophy awarded every year, starting in 2015, at Scale Model World at Telford. This will be the IPMS Ireland Trophy I have just received word from the IPMS (UK) Competition Secretary that our proposal was approved by the Executive Committee of IPMS (UK). Like a number of other national IPMS organisations, we now have the opportunity to publicise our existence to the largest assemblage of modellers worldwide, and to encourage modellers to make kits of an Irish subject, or with an Irish connection. Also like other national IPMS organisations, the Award is not for Irish modellers, but for non-Irish modellers. The title and details will be as follows:- IPMS IRELAND Award For the best model of an Irish subject or with an Irish connection, NOT entered by an Irish modeller – any scale, any type. (If the model has an Irish connection, it will be necessary for the entrant to indicate what this connection may be.) So - if you happen not to be an Irish modeller (by which is meant, of course, a modeller not living in Ireland), then this is your opportunity to compete for this Award. Good news, finally! Now...here goes the controversy: Irish as in terms of the whole Isle of Ireland or Irish as in connection with current Republic of Ireland / Irish Free State - Saorstát Éireann / Eire and with connection to the territory within the named state, for example WWI soldier of RDF, aircraft operated by RFC/RAF from within that territory and similar? I am bit worried that in the 1st case we might run into troubles with IPMS UK, or not? I know, that I might be a bit arse, nevertheless, I think this should be clarified to avoid any unwanted confusion or arguments, everybody knows that the temper could rise over this silly issue. We won't run into trouble with ipms uk - that is already sorted out by me with the Competition Secretary - it is Ireland, not "Eire". You will also note that if it is an Irish connection, then the entrant will have to make it clear what the connection will be. In any event, two people from the IPMS Ireland Committee, or their appointees, will be the judges. Philip Edited by Prenton, Feb 9 2015, 03:37 PM.

as to the "finally". We made this pitch to the IPMS UK folks after Telford in 2014, and I had a chat myself personally with the Competition Secretary (as I judge there). The wait was until it was formally agreed with the IPMS UK Executive Committee, in respect of which I was notified last weekend. Philip |

"I am bit worried that in the 1st case we might run into troubles with IPMS UK, or not?" Filip, Don't worry about the UK Comp Sec he has other things to worry about. As far as he is concerned, his worry is finding judges from the Awarding Nations. I myself have been a judge of at least 2 of these over the years, one from a country I have only ever seen on the Discovery Channel. Trust me as long as the Awarding Nation's judges are happy so is he. regards p.s. We could perhaps throw a bottle of Irish Whiskey in with the Trophy,at least for the first few years. THAT would be different and get IPMS Ireland noticed

In terms of the actual trophy, I am more thinking of a bit of Bog Oak....a real relic of Ireland.... with perhaps a plaque on it. I tend to agree with Pat on the alcohol - we do, however, provide this form of Irish refreshment for visiting modellers from other countries at the Overseas section at Telford - and for any of our members that stop by - immediately after the Act of Remembrance on the Sunday at 11 am. Alan, our colleague from the Mid-West branch, established this tradition a number of years ago - and a very good one it is too. Philip |

Naah - that wouldn't be appropriate. Old pre-Euro currency. Frankfurt wouldn't like it! Just a plaque on the bog oak will do fine. Edited by Prenton, Feb 16 2015, 03:21 PM.
