Well in the past I've done 1/35 U.S. Military in digital camo, I've even done the female form and black latex in the guise of 1/18 catwoman ![]() For this GB however, I've decide to take a huge leap out of my comfort zone and even a huge leap out of this universe and into the universe know as Marvel ![]() Background Brash adventurer Peter Quill aka Star Lord finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits--Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand--with the galaxy's fate in the balance and become The Guardians of the Galaxy. The film was released in 2014 and an instant hit with my two boys who are big Marvel movie fans. And they just loved the characters Groot and Rocket. So while surfing various modelling sites I discovered this kit and luckily managed to get my hands on one. So if you've not guess yet for the GB I will be building Rocket Racoon, from the marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy. ![]() Rocket Net reference material by Manxman, on Flickr So little bit about the character and kit. CHARACTER INFO Real Name - Rocket Raccoon Height - 4' Weight - 55 lbs. Abilities Rocket has many of the same abilities as a normal raccoon, such as a heightened sense of smell and sight as compared to a human. But he also has a very short temper and is an expert marksman with a penchant for large weaponry he builds himself. The kit is by Dragon Action Models in 1/9 scale. ![]() Rocket Box Art by Manxman, on Flickr The kit itself is fairly basic and only consists of 20 highly detailed and well molded parts. ![]() Rocket Parts by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket Parts by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket Parts by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket Parts by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() RocketParts by Manxman, on Flickr First stage of this build will be to clean the parts and assemble them once dry. Then I'll deal with any filling required but fingers crossed there won't be. As it will be hard to fill in fur. I am thinking of building this figure including head as one before priming and painting and only leaving the gun separate. However, briefly looking at it that might not be possible with the high collar and how the neck fits into the body. But I'll keep you updated, and thanks for reading so far. Wow Pete, that's going to be superb! Great film and character and nice looking kit. Appears that some of the links to your parts pics have gone missing? (and don't call him a Raccoon to his face, either!) Dermot Edited by Dermot, Sep 9 2015, 11:54 PM.

Well not a great start to this build, sad to say after removing the round pin points from the model parts as followed in the instructions, the fit was awful. The shaped locking insert where badly sized, in both length and width to fit.![]() Rocket WiP by Manxman, on Flickr I end up cutting all the first insert blocks off and only leaving the second outer insert in place. This helped with the fit a lot. PVA glue was then used to fit the parts after which the fit still wasn’t perfect with some gaps so superglue was used as a liquid filler to help limit the need for sanding. Guess I’ll know just how good it is after priming and if more filling and sanding will be required. ![]() Rocket WiP by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP by Manxman, on Flickr But based on forecast for weekend not sure I'll be priming anytime soon. The fit of the gun however was easier and went together nicely and normal Tamiya extra thin used. ![]() Rocket WiP Blaster by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP Blaster by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP Blaster by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP Blaster by Manxman, on Flickrming |

Pat that it certainly will be and pushing me past anything I've done before. Now whilst most raccoons are shades of grey, most still shots of rocket from the movie has him in shades of brown. This is what I'll be attempting. |

I thought this was going to be a great painting challenge but I see build isn't that straightforward either . Stretched sprue whiskers ? |

John, I've never had much luck with stretched sprues, but the other month when I attended the Dublin chapter I think it was Joe that brought loads of samples of thin wire. I managed to get some and this I think will make great whiskers so thanks for the suggestion, but need get the painting done first. Sean finally managed to get it measured for you. The gun is 7 inches long ![]() Rocket WiP Size by Manxman, on Flickr Rocket is nearly 8 inches long so not quite at scale if he only meant to be 4ft tall ![]() Rocket WiP Size by Manxman, on Flickr |

Well managed to get it primed in the fine weather yesterday and on checking the seam today, most aren't to bad considering this where fur meets suit. Added a touch more superglue here and there just to give the few bad ones a better look. So hope to get the first base coat of medium brown on this week along with the main suit colour of orange brown.

Well painting has started on Rocket ![]() After looking at the painting guide, screen grab images of rocket from the net and photos of real racoons, I decided to adjust my approach to this slightly. Stage 1 was to paint the hands, feet, nose and eyes, as these are all black and fur can be seen clearly lying over the edges. ![]() Rocket WiP painting stage 1 by Manxman, on Flickr Stage 2 was to give the fur it's base coat, this is a medium brown. ![]() Rocket WiP painting stage 2 by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP painting stage 2 by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP painting stage 2 by Manxman, on Flickr Stage 3 will be to apply a base coat of orange brown to the suit and stage 4 to give colour to his mouth. Hope to get that done this week. After which I’ll be doing the shadows of the fur with darker brown and black washes. Thanks for following and any tips, comments, etc very welcome. Another good night at the bench stage 3 underway, with the mouth now coloured, teeth still remain to be sorted. Stage 4 started with the first base coat on the suit in orange brown, I think a second coat will be required.![]() Rocket WiP stage 3 & 4 by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP stage 3 & 4 by Manxman, on Flickr Painting of Rockets Blaster also started last night and a base coat of metallic black applied. On top of this I plan to add sections in brass, silver and solid black before weathering. So plenty still to do ;). ![]() Rocket WiP Gun stage 1 by Manxman, on Flickr Finishing off the night, I applied a coat of Klear to the hands, feet, arms, legs and head to protect it before I start the shading. |

Well made some progress with Rocket. First using a darker brown, I painted his mask, and tail rings. Then adding more water than normal I turned the same dark brown into a brown wash for the shading. This was applied to the recess patches of his fur. And later on I began the highlighting with white dry brush. Shading ![]() Rocket WiP Shading by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP Shading by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP Shading by Manxman, on Flickr Higlights ![]() Rocket WiP Highlighting by Manxman, on Flickr ![]() Rocket WiP Highlighting by Manxman, on Flickr The fur now needs a couple of coats of Matt varnish and I can't decide whether to brush on a coat as normal or pick up a can of spray. Anyway when it done I can decide if more highlights and white around the face is required or not. In mean time work has begun on his blaster as seen in one of the pictures. All comments, suggestions gratefully received |

Id be wary of varnish ( particularly sprayed )muting /erasing your nice paint effects into an all overall 'sameness' .Seek advice /research .Looks great as is in my opinion . Maybe leave varnish off fur anyway ? Edited by fs2005, Sep 29 2015, 08:42 AM.

Cheers Sean. John that was exactly my concern. But I am also concerned the shading and highlights could be chipped off which is why I wanted to seal it. So stuck between a rock and hard place on which is least risk. I will however Matt varnish the hands and feet, but part of me now wishes I applied a coat of Matt to the base coat, but read the shading wash would be better on semi gloss to gloss which is why I used a single coat of klear. If anyone else got advice or suggestions on this, please chip in. Edited by Manxman, Sep 29 2015, 08:56 AM.
