Here is my entry to the group build its Romeo Models Viking chieftan figure AD 1014.
Posted Image

Its a white metal figure from their 75mm range. I have previously built their "Irish warrior AD 1014 " see link and decided that together they would form a nice Battle of Clontarf pair. This figure is beautifully sculpted by Gianni La Rocca and is made up of 13 parts including a base. The clean-up is minimal and the fit is almost perfect. These figures are heavy I can tell you!

The figure
There are alot of similarities between this figure and the Irish warrior figure, both by the same sculptor. The chainmail tunic, the shoes, sword and the use of the cloak are very similar. All parts have positive location and with the exception of the fit of the two legs and lower tunic is almost seamless. This is great as it allows for the painting of separate items before final assembly. The reason I choose a figure in 75mm range is that they are larger than 1:35 stuff and this gives me a full figure to work with and a face big enough to paint well without having to pull off a Leonard da Vinci on it.

Anyway here is the obligatory parts overview.

Being the big ol'nerd that I am I have even gone and dug up some research into fabric and dyes used by the vikings, now I have an excuse to visit Ardmore studios for further research ....... who knows might even find a shieldmaiden.

More to follow soon...

Regards
Brian

Nice looking casts, but no horns?

Can't be a Viking then, because, as we've been told, they had horns :D

Here is some progress photos; white undercoat, followed by black for the chainmail and then onto the primairy colours.

Assembly is straight forward so the planning goes into the painting and that means a little research. The artwork on the box looks fine and I might just follow it. However I decided to see what research was available regarding Norse clothing,as you do....
The primary type of clothing was made from wool or linnen.

Undyed clothes seem to be the norm and as such black, white and grey and combinations thereof would be typical for wool. In the old Irish chronicle dealing with the Norse men "Cogadh Gaedhl re Gallaibh" the viking are described as " gormglas" suggesting blue green clothing.
Not very exciting is it?

Nerdy bit :
The use of dyes was expensive and therefore limited. Study of various viking sagas suggest two primary colours which were used, blue and red.
What colours could they produce and what were the ingredients?
For blue there were two options indigo tin and woad. The former giving a stronger hue compared to the latter.
For the red there are a number options madder, lichens and walnut. For red scarlet they would have used kermes, which is derived from the dried bodies of inspect which lives on the kermes oak. Get yourself a RLM match for that !

The box art shows the figure in a combination of blue pants and pale red Tunic. So if the figure is a high ranking figure then the colour would work. As a combination they work ok too.

I am using what ever paints are to hand and its a mixture of waterbased, enamels and old fashioned oil paints. The drying time on the latter is looooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnng so I have to put this way to let it dryout somewhat. None of this is finished yet I sill have a lot of tidying up and weathering to do.

Thats all for now,

Brian

Great start. One trick I've learned is that by mixing oils and enamels you can shorten the drying time of oils considerably.

As for the colours remember that as well as raiders the Vikings were trading far and wide by the time of the Battle of Clontarf and could have acquired coloured material that way.

Ah the Battle of Clontarf, sure I remember it well, 1014 it was. Me and Brian has just finished saying a decade of the rosary in celebration of the glorious victory. I said I was going to step across the road and have a quick pint of two in the 'Sheds'. Brian was going to join me until some low life Viking happen to find him still saying his prayers ( always was bit to holy for me) and butchered him.
There's memories for ya!!
Cheers

Here is a update of the ol' Clontarf ruffian. Apparently some of you are so old that you have personal memories of the events.I hope u cut me some slack and save on the joyless modelling accuracy nonsense.I found a picture of Ule Blue pants landing on that fateful day. Here is a photo form the CNN report

That is him at the front with the big axe. Can't bring these Danes anywhere without them embarrassing ya.
Here are the colours I went with
Tunic: crimson red
Chain mail:duh...chain mail
Trousers:cobalt Blue
Cloak cream/linen lining finished off with the fur of the rare Tallagh bear.
Helmet and chainmail: iron/ silver + gold for the figures
Shield blue/white and wood on the inside.
Shoes:leather+ cow pancake colour
Axe: Woody Wood Pecker brown.

Here are some dodgy update photos

Actually looks beter than in the photo... honest

As you can see it all looked very pretty and then I went and made every thing very dirty. I cracked on improving chainmail by continous washing and dry brushing . Followed on by doing all the leather strapping. Washing the whole lot and adding varnish to proctect. Still not finished but getting there.

Fit the parts and then matt everything and add the pastels and powders. 10 days to go. Should manage .... :>

Moving towards the end of this build, here are some closes ups of the viking head,

I also decided to do something for the overall presentation. I have a home made base which I will use. In order to spice it up I decded to make a nameplate and this is what I came up with

Sheet styrene numbers and rivets
Posted Image

The name plate - it is supposed to be wood ...
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

and then the final result
Posted Image

Finals to follow, I have run into a snag in the final assembly, the arms joined together holding the axe do not line up. How that happend is a mystery to me as the individual fit of the arms is bang on, it just when you join them through the hands holding the axe that the whole thing goes south......

The 10 is the deadline . Still 4 days to go..
regards
Brian
