So there I was, Minding my own business first thing of a Sunday.. Reading down through the Nuremberg announcements on Rumourmonger.. And there it was - a post offering an opinion as to why my beloved Dragon hadn't attended. Still haven't gotten over the shock of it! So, double timed over to Ship Model Forum, where a similar discussion had began. Could it be true, no, maybe, but wait, why haven't all the promised rereleased kits appeared? Feel like going upstairs and giving All my Dragon ships a hug.. There there.. Bloody Iron man.. bloody star wars.. Gonna have a good cry now! Barry Sp |

Not worried about Dragon as they don't do anything modern but last I heard Airfix were still on the go.... |

Didn't Dragon just announce some new stuff just before or during Nuremberg? An M60 I think it was. They didn't attend the fair this year but then again, they've probably never had competition as fierce as it is now. As for Airfix- they are part of the Hornby group and they have been in serious financial diffs for a good few years. They wanted a real bump in 2012 with London 2012 Olympic tie ins, like London Buses and Black Cabs etc but it never really materialized. Then I read they had major logistic and production trouble in, I believe, China. I think they shuttered production there and moved elsewhere, possibly India if I remember correctly. Supposedly they are more stable now but I don't think they are anywhere near the position they want to be financially. |

Googled a bit about Airfix- not much info on where they moved production to- India and Vietnam came up. They did move production of two lines of products to the UK and they appear to have re-jigged some logistics stuff in Europe. They were still announcing losses in December last year though. Were Meng not piggybacking on another company's stand at Nuremberg? Edited by Karl187, Feb 6 2016, 05:54 PM.

The Dragon alleged rumour, again alleged, I suppose only has any significance for those who build their kits. Personally, I've been buying their stuff since the late eighties, as a teenager whose lms had two small shelves of Airfix, Revell, Monogram.. Dublin with it's Tamiya, Hasegawa, Dragon etz was a new world, and for those of us who remember The Banba on Talbot St and 3rd floor Easons, even Marks on Westmoreland St, there were shelf after shelf of products to tempt us! Curiousity got the better of me so, I spoke to an aqaintance from the Mainland.. His twopence worth was that Dragon were simply moving on to do other things, and as that business grew, then fewer kits would most likely be released in the future. Now, right or wrong, love or hate them, they have produced quite a volume of products over the years, some rightly lauded, others rightly canned. Again, personal opinion, but I liked their kits, and have shown a good measure of brand loyalty ever since, it's no wonder then that 6 out of my 10 favourite kits of all time have a Dragon/Shanghai Dragon logo. So, realistically, Dragon will continue in some form producing, just as Airfix have, but I do wonder what impact the new companies are having on the old stalwarts of the business. I recently bought two 1/700 FREMM French Frigates from Freedom Models, they arrived promptly, and upon opening I was really impressed by the quality of this manufacturer's third kit release and first ship kit release. I suppose its all change, but I just wonder if they will be around in twenty years as Dragon have!? Barry |
