I was in a model shop in Edinburgh over the week there ans they had a good number of kits that were quite old and I was wondering what would you do with them?

Make them?
Hold on to them in the thought they'd be worth something?

They only cost about £5 or so, so I'd imagine my second question is fairly redundant!

As Dave (Opadag) is doing - you make them! That is, if you are up to the challenge. :-"

However, the key thing is to see just HOW old they are, and how difficult/easy they are to do (and/or how accurate they are...that is, if you are a rivet counter! :X ).

If they are, for example, some of the old Matchbox kits, then it may well be worth getting them and giving them a try, as they are usually crisp and easy to do. :)

On the other hand, if they are ancient Eastern European kits, with hectares of flash and overly thick sprues, you might leave those on the shelf as simply not worth the trouble. :O

In my view, Scalemates is your friend here - type in the name of the kit in front of you into the search section, and up will pop a review or two. :book: That way, you can make a quick, but informed, decision....

Yeah they'll never be worth more than what the shop is asking for them.

I sometimes pick up old kits out of nostalgia but they tend to languish in my stash until I put them in the swop shop at the IPMS Nationals.

I find that if it is a kit of a subject that I am interested and I know that is is not a total dog I will be inclined to pick it up, but I am less inclined to buy a kit just because I believe it to be a bargin, far too many kits in the stash that I have acquired over the years as impulse purchases that will never be built(by me at least) to do that.

Good info! There was nothing especially that caught my eye and I didn't have time to look on scalemates before I had to leave, but I think there were a lot of old Airfix and Heller. probably some Revell too

Old kits....I'm waiting for the slagging to start ;) as I seem to be the one who builds these!

Like Philip said, knowing the kit's history from a site like Scalemates is great because you can usually find out if they're a dog or a hidden pearl.

Sure, they won't have masses of detail or Tamigawa precision fit....but depends on your modelling priorities I guess.

If you're prepared to put in some extra work or are interested in that subject, as Murfv said, then I say buy them............before I do!! :-"

In theory I think I'd be on for trying something like that, but in practice it might not be the best idea :D I reckon I'd get so far and just say "OK, it doesn't look so bad anyway" as I struggle to fill and sand and the rest of it.

Good to know about Scalemates & that the shop was Wonderland.
Have to say having sold most of my old stash some years ago (I have a newer stash now) and thrown out almost all my spares boxes contents a really long tine ago boy do I regret that single action now.
Reading through the old AV News and Scale Acft Modelling mag kit reviews was an interesting exercise. Got a good idea of how some of the old kits were considered by the reviewers.
But Yes I like some of the old kits, get great pleasure in making them even if they are not up to today's standards. Some of the older paint schemes were terrific (apologies to ship and AFV builders).
Have fun & enjoy the hobby.

Gertney

Hi all. Was in Singapore for a month visiting my Daughter. She found me the best model shop i have ever been in, miniature hobby. I don't know how to post photos, so i will write down the models i got. "Tamiya" M151A2, M551 Sheridan, SU-76M Russian gun, M36 Jackson, M107 self propelled gun, T-55 Enigma, ad-kf2 184 Elephant, ""Trumpeter" Afghan rebels, Russian NBC armoured car, LAV-111 wheeled armoured vehicle, "Kinetic 4x4 MRAP AFV, "Masterbox" Commonwealth AFV crew, world of fantasy kit no 2, "Meng" IDF infantry set, "Tiger Model" Panhard VBL 45, "AFV" Husky MK 111, "Valkrie" civil militia Corp figures, and Academy French foreign legion figures. The total price was 985 Singapore dollars. After talking to the owner for a while, and telling him about the IPMS in Ireland, he let me have all the above for 600 Singapore dollars. I reckon about 400 euro. He also give me for free tamiya glue, MIG weathering powders, and tamiya masking tape. A lovely gentleman and a brilliant model shop. If i want anything else he told me to let my Daughter know, and if he has not got it, he will definitely get it for me. Overall, a great visit to Singapore to see my Daughter, and the bonus of finding a great model shop.

That's some haul Gertney! And a great discount...but I bet you lost all that to the "excess baggage" charge on the flight home :)
