'IPMS judging us'? It's that attitude that has other modelling clubs disliking the IPMS... ![]() J. |

In fairness I think you are supposed to read it US of A and not us. On the other hand I am familar with this video and found the man to be a terrible bore. Sorry Pat while the basic information is fine listening to this fella drone with his little pointer stick just turned me off.

I have done some judging at small local shows and at Southern Expo one of the largest 2 day shows in England. The first pass down the competition tables it is easy to cut the entries down to a top 5 even a top 3. This is when the smallest detail can make or break, however without exception all the shows I have attended (and judged at) in the UK they have had prize winning entries. Two years ago I was attending a two day show in Calais and was invited to join the judging panel and it was an eye opener. for a start just about every entry in the competition was in effect a diorama, Simply putting your pride and joy on a plain base was not an option. We as judges could award Gold's, Silver's and Bronze as we deemed fit... in each category. However you had to be able to justify to your fellow judges why you awarded a Gold or Silver to a model and if in your opinion there were no entries in any particular category that you felt merited a Gold then no Gold should be awarded.. I have seen categories were one Gold is awarded with no Silver or Bronze because that was the level of entries on that day The pressure on the judge to 'get it right' was high but very rewarding as I found it works well as a modeller who is still perfecting techniques can enter against the super detailed entries and know that their efforts will be rewarded with a Bronze or Silver even if there are five other models of equal skill and you are not left feeling why bother.... I know in shows where only a 3rd, 2nd & 1st are awarded if you are at the level where you are constantly the 4th best model on the table you can feel like you are not improving and may lose interest.... In the French system if you don't earn a Bronze then you know there is more work to do Edited by modeller, Sep 14 2016, 12:05 AM.

Yeah he does come across as boring but I get the strong feeling that he doesn't really want to be there at all and a lot more people were supposed to turn up. Also judging from the reaction and the excuses from the modellers I think he reckons he is wasting his time and he will see the same flaws and mistakes turn up at the next competition. |

Sometimes in our nationals I have seen classes where judges decided not to award a gold. We also have a commendation for models which were borderline bronzes. |

...and for those who can spend a few minutes reading, IPMS 'US' have this handy handbook of what to look for when building and judging models. No need to read that blurb about judges and who can become one, just scroll down a bit to chapter called 'Modelling Basics' But, one paragraph stood out for me and this is it: Beyond the basics, another tremendously important consideration is consistency. A model should exhibit the same standard of building throughout. Thus, an aircraft model in which the builder has superdetailed the cockpit but not the wheel wells would lack a consistent level of detail. |

Definitely the IPMS USA does their judging differently from those judging at Telford! Philip |

" Cattywampus " means out of alignment apparently .This video can actually be very entertaining in its own way at times despite the heavy start .Its almost 'drama' .At one stage one of the boys get the light and points out mistakes on the judge's national medal winning model/s .There only seem to be a handful of attendees and a loud mobile phone goes off at least 4/5 times . |
