Yeah they're great ,this seems to be now the second best model show ( in Europe anyway )after Telford .Wonder would a visit be hard to arrange .Did a TINY bit of homework on flights etc and it certainly wasn't perfectly simple re times /costs etc as far as I could see

It's a nice time of year , not as cold , dark, wet and maybe even frosty (but an exhibition centre full of models would give you a wArm glow) and a group would keep costs of car hire /transfers down .

Gents,
A few points about this,

-SMC is a great show which is specifically aimed at figure building and armour.

-this is not the IPMS NL show which this year takes place in the Utrecht area on 29th of October . Known as the Euro Scale Modelling this is the biggest show in Europe after Telford. The timing of this is fixed for the end of October every year because of other events(Telford).

- I have in the past extended an open invitation to IPMS IRL members wishing to visit the (IPMS NL)show either as casual spectator or indeed as club with a table. That inivtaion still stands for individual members or a club delegation.

-the SMC show will be held on the 3rd weekend of October form now on. If you are interested in going let me know its an hour and a half drive from me so I could put up a few stray soul or two.

If anybody is serious about visting either show or indeed any in the Netherlands, just PM me and I will do my best to facilitate your plans.

Regards
Brian

Looks like a nice show alrite.

As most of you will know, Mid-West Branch of IPMS Ireland, after great success of our Vienna trip of 2016, will be organizing 'field trip' to one of the continental shows again next year. There are few runners and the final decision will be made on our December meeting.
We have been discussing and talking a lot about what are the viable options - ease of travel to and from the show, places of cultural and historical value, so there is something more than plastic involved, cost, time of the year.
Even though some of those conditions could be twisted, time of the year and ease of travel are massive factors. Firstly, we presume that we will be carrying some of our models, secondly Mid-West Branch is hoping to be present on both IPMS Ireland Nationals as well as IPMS UK Nationals in Telford. Both of which are held in October/November. Taking into account, relatively high, expenses involved of being present on these two important events - accommodation, food, travel - yet another autumn trip abroad could be a bridge too far for most of Mid-West Branch members and it could prove, at this stage, a step too far for many other IPMS IRL members as well, in my opinion.

I do understand, that members of Dublin Branch, as the numerically superior branch, want to venture further afield as a group to learn and promote IPMS IRL Nationals, nonetheless, unless this hypothetical proposal is closed to anyone from outside the Dublin commuting belt, wouldn't be a better option to join with your Mid-West colleagues and go on some easier expedition to gain experience and slowly pushing the boundries of what is achievable?

I don't want to be taken the wrong way on this one, it's just something to think about...

...at the end of the day, everyone can go whenever they want, personally, I'd love to go to modelling show in Saumur tank museum one year, but, I think, I need to gain experience and confidence to embark into such unknown waters. A I've said, something to think about.

BTW, I've heard about, at least two or three, another shows to claim 'The Best Show in Europe' title, Moson in Hungary and ModellBrno in CZ are two of those - both of them are on Mid-West Branch target list

Telford is always refereed to as 'the biggest show' rather than the best, even though the competition tables are getting better year after year, but that all doesn't really matter at the end as hospitality of some small shows can beat cold mass welcome of some of the large events hands down any given day :P

BKirwanI had a quick check for weekend of Euro Scale Modelling and Ryanair to Endhoven or AerLingus to Amsterdam seem to be all ( well) over the €200 mark .( and I'm not even sure that was return ) Is it generally an expensive route ? Maybe I'm just spoiled by €50 Telford return last year .

Its not a particulary expensive route but its a very busy route. The flights are nearly always full both for Ryan Air and Aer Lingus so booking in advance (6 weeks) is advisable to avoid paying too much.

Brian - as discussed over the weekend, the Netherlands show might be something to do in a future year - if flights are booked well in advance, cost might not be such a heavy item. We could combine it with a trip to that gigantic model shop near Schipol....

Philip

PS - the very first overseas trip (apart from Telford) done by IPMS Ireland, was done by three of us from the Dublin Chapter back in 2009, when we went to E-day in Prague (Ken, Paul and myself). You can read about that trip in the second IPMS Ireland newsletter (pdf copies of which are in the resources section of the IPMS Ireland website).
