Two more quick questions! How much is entry to the show, and how much to enter a model to the competition?

Thanks...
Jason

As per the flyer for D6 admission is €3 each with Children(under 14's) free when accompanied by an adult. http://www.ipmsireland.com/Events.html

According to the IPMS Ireland 2017 Nationals Competition Rules, Definitions and Classes the fee to enter the competition is €3 per model (link is on the events page to the competition rules and regs)

Did the option for online registration happen this year?
Hi Barry.
It is not possible to do online registration - we looked into it, but there are too many problems, not least the lack of volunteers to organise it in the week running up to the show, and also the fact that on-line registration would not suit our type of competition. On-line registration is done at Telford, but entry to that competition is limited to members of IPMS (whereas our competition is open to everyone), and of course they don't charge a fee (we do), and they have lots of folks to send out the entry cards in advance.....

However, we will be putting up the competition registration form onto the website over the next couple of days, and you can download it and fill it in ahead of time, and then, when you register your models on the Saturday morning, and pay the €3 fee per entry, you will get the entry cards to go with your entries, each with their own unique identified number. We will also, of course, have a supply of the forms on the day for those who turn up, but they will have to fill in the forms themselves there and then, before they can register.

Once the form is ready, I also plan to send it out to all paid up members by e-mail.

Another quick question! :)

There was a bit of a discussion with the Adhesion lads about what does and doesn't qualify for the SK categories. The rules give a few examples (like adding seatbelts is ok, but adding brake lines isn't) but one example that was asked was drilling gun barrels. Is a kit still considered SK if you drill out the gun barrels, or does that move it into ASoD? Thanks...

Jason - in my opinion (but subject to a final decision from the competition Secretary - that is Sean (35th scale), whose final decision it of course is) drilling out gun barrels is not adding anything to a kit, but actually subtracting something (albeit a tiny bit of plastic) from it. The sense of the SK rule is that you are only allowed to add certain items (seatbelts, aerials and rigging), but not anything else. Also, I wouldn't feel that drilling out a gun barrel is akin to opening cockpits or hatches, which is not allowed unless provided for in the base kit.

Here is what the rules say:-

"Seatbelts, rigging and aerials from any other sources may be added as appropriate to the subject. Any other form of detailing e.g. brake pipes, ignition leads is NOT allowed in this class. No opened cockpits or hatches are allowed unless it is an option in the kit. "

Also, as the only SK classes are, in fact, aircraft - and then only military aircraft in 1/72 and 1/48 - the actual work involved in drilling out the barrels would not be particularly noticeable. You will note that there are no non-aircraft SK classes, and the larger aircraft scales (1/32nd and 1/24th, for example) have no SK classes. So no big guns are involved, such as might be found on tanks etc. Even the tank-busting guns on a late model Stuka (such as a Ju 87G-1 "Kanonenvogel") aren't particular large (and the kit might have the guns with an open muzzle anyhow, depending on the manufacturer)...

However, the final judgement on this is reserved to Sean.

Hi Philip,

Thanks for your reply. I'd tend to agree with you, I don't think drilling out gun barrels should be an issue. I'd treat it the same as thinning the trailing edge of a wing for example. It's not in the instructions to do it, but it's basically just more sanding than usual, and it's not adding anything to the kit (though it might add accuracy to the build!). I guess the decision is based on whether drilling out the guns would be considered 'detailing' or not.

And I also agree that really it comes down to the Comp. Secretary's call, Sean's in this case, to get a final say on it, which is true of any rule in any show.

Thanks...

Apologies for the delay in replying to this but just to confirm Philips reply that drilling out the gun barrels would be acceptable to still be in the SK category. Same for thinning the trailing edges as Jason mentioned. You are still only using what came in the box.

Great, Sean, thanks for confirming that. It was more a 'I wonder about the rules' question than a specific question re a specific build, but it's good to get clarification...

NEWS ABOUT THE IRISH NATIONALS COMPETITION

This is to announce that there will be two additional Special Awards at the upcoming show, both kindly sponsored by Marks Models.

These are:-

The Best Breakthrough Act Award
This award is for the best entry by an adult modeller who has not previously entered into the Irish Nationals competition.

The Most Unusual Subject Award
This award is for the most unusual subject/model entered into the competition.

As a result, the rules and classes have slightly changed from those already up on the website.
You can download the revised (and final) rules and classes here:- http://jmp.sh/uhfiLAw

In addition, the competition registration form has been modified to ask whether or not you have previously entered models in the IPMS
Ireland Nationals (from 2010 to date).

You can download the form here:- http://jmp.sh/v/m8mn3P5dnnTduZ9cwwNB

Actually, if you do intend entering the competition, it would be helpful if you could download the form and fill it in, and bring it along to the
show on the Saturday morning, where you can register your models (the fee is €3 per model, and the competition is open to everyone, whether
members of the club or not. Entry to the show itself is, of course, free for IPMS members, and costs €3 for adults and anyone over 14 years.)

Competition registration runs from 10.00 on Saturday 7th October until 13.00. The prize-giving will take place at 3.30 on Sunday 8th October.

See you there!

Philip

CALLING STAR WARS MODELLERS - YOUR REBELLION / EMPIRE NEEDS YOU !!!

Have you built a Star Wars model kit this year? Or have you a Star Wars model built from a galaxy far, far away?! (i.e. not this year)

If so, would be great if you could bring it along for the club table this year at the Nationals where there will be a selection of Star Wars models to celebrate 40 years of one of the most iconic movie series of all time.
As well as its characters, Star Wars is renowned for its models/modelmaking and brought practical effects using miniatures to a new level.

So c'mon - let's see those Ties, X-Wings, Falcons, AT-ATs and Star Destroyers.

And make the Rebels / Empire proud. B-)

Cheers,
Dermot

I'll bring along an AT-AT Dermot, and ask Jnr to bring along the old Airfix AT-ST, pictured in this pages banner up top :>

I'd be tempted to knock something else together for the day too, time permitting... :choco:
