Hi lads, Here's a link to some photos from the weekend, mostly of the club tables and a small selection from the competition itself. With the latter, I was in a bit of a rush to get away and make our ferry but you'll find plenty of the show winners pics on t'internet. Scale Model World 2016 Telford Cheers, Dermot |

Excellent photos, Dermot. (You managed to get a lot in, given the short time you were there...some of your photos are of things that I missed, even though I was there for the entire weekend...) Philip |

Here are some of mine. As usual, I have allowed for the fact that others will have taken photos of kits etc on the various tables, so I have uploaded some shots of what happens in the show, the club stand, the judges in session, and some of the more quirky items on show. As I spent most of the Saturday of the show at the competition, the bulk of what I have here is of that area. FRIDAY Due to some new rules brought in, at the last minute, by IPMS (UK), only four of us were permitted to be in the venue on the Friday afternoon. As we were the occupants of the two cars bringing the majority of the club table display, it was left to us to be the "set-up" team. Here we are:- ![]() (the photo was taken by Alan who, with Lindsay, managed to sneak in, regardless of the rules....) The club table looked well, in my opinion. Some additional models were added to it on the Saturday, but unfortunately, I do not have photos of these. However, Dermot's photos, via the link above, shows these. Included in the club table display, by agreement with the Committee, was a mini-display exhibiting the work of the Spanish Civil War group build from last year, on the basis that 2016 was the 80th anniversary of the start of that war. I managed to find some contemporary posters which I got printed and mounted, to act as a backdrop to the models on display ![]() (many thanks to all those who entrusted their models to me and Graham for this display!)... SATURDAY The set-up folks were also the only people allowed into the halls before 9 am, so we queued at 8 am to be let in through the back doors. The weather had taken a turn for the worst in the meantime, so we were not too pleased to find the door still locked at 8.05, while we stood out in the rain! ![]() As mentioned above, I spent much of my time up in the competition area. This was the scene at about noon on the Saturday, when all of the competitors were removed, and the place was left to the judges.... ![]() So we got down to the hard work of choosing between all of the well finished and displayed models in front of us. These three had the unenvious task of choosing between 32 models in the 1/72nd "out of the box" class.... (the classes I was judging had somewhat less, thankfully, of about 12 - 15 per class). ![]() Most judges operated in teams of two, but we had some guests this year from IPMS USA, who "shadowed" us, in order to understand how we manage to judge in three and a half hours, while they take three and a half days....(I personally, along with my colleague - who were judging 1/48th prop aircraft - had two of the US guys with us for about a half hour). The judging continued until about 3 pm, when all of the judges were gathered together to vote for the Best of Show, from amongst the best of each of the categories. You will have, no doubt, seen elsewhere the fabulous Ferrari "what-if" that won this award. The vote was reasonably close, with five votes (from about 50 of us judges) separating the winner from the next one, the winner of the aircraft class. That was a beautiful model of a Loire 130 Flying Boat. Here is a shot of that model:- ![]() One new feature of the competition this year was the number of disqualifications. Many of these were because the competitors had simply not read the rules, and so had entered the "out of the box" or SK classes, without providing a set of instructions. Such as this poor unfortunate:- ![]() Other reasons for disqualification was that the competitor had entered the model in the wrong class - here a 1/72nd plane (which was very well done, incidentally) had been placed in one of the classes for 1/48th aircraft.... ![]() In the competition, there were a number of medals awarded to members of the club. I managed to get photos of some of these, but by no means all.... Here is one of Joe Moran's two gold medal winners:- ![]() And his bronze medal winner:- ![]() Here is Gerry Doyle's silver medal winner for the Spitfire floatplane:- ![]() And Roy Kinsella's bronze for this lovely job:- ![]() Roy also won a commendation for this model:- ![]() Congrats, lads! (and apologies to the others whose winners I missed...) My next post will cover some of the other entries in the competition, which I saw on the Sunday, as well as a couple from the main halls. SUNDAY On this occasion, I spent most of my time down in Hall 3, at our own stand, while making occasional (!) forays out into Halls 1 and 2 to engage in some retail therapy. Many thanks to Simon Nolan, who found some bargains for me in various places (including Quickboost resin accessories for £1 each), but who also led me astray to a bookstand, where I spent far too much money...... I did venture up to the Competition Area to take a closer look at some of the dioramas. These included some very good aircraft dioramas, as you can see here:- ![]() ![]() This one was so small that the competitor helpfully provided a magnifying glass for us:- ![]() While this one garnered the IPMS France trophy for its creator:- ![]() (I took lots of shots of this one, as I have the kit in the stash....someday....) In the sci-fi/what-if area, I spotted a couple of interesting exhibits:- A variation on Revel's Amerika Bomber: ![]() (and no, I don't know what film he is talking about..) And this rather fun diorama, where an alien is helping the Nazis build a spacecraft... ![]() That one got a lot of comment on social media in the week after the show. Another diorama that drew the attention of those at the show was this humorous one showing the crew of a tank stopped in a street in France:- ![]() The diorama had, curiously, a large crowd of men around it that morning. I wonder why.... The modeller even had provided a small window, in the back wall of the diorama, so those with eagle eyes (or cameras) could see into the bathroom on the top floor!! ![]() Down in the halls, the shopping went on. Many of the club stands were excellent. However, sitting at a club stand all day can get a little bit boring, at least for this gentleman, who decided to make good use of his time... ![]() Or maybe he had bought something at the kitswop or from a trader, and couldn't wait to open the box and get cracking... Finally, I present a photo of an aircraft that I found on one of the IPMS (UK) Branch tables during the day. Had it been entered into the competition, it might well have won the IPMS Ireland Trophy. ![]() Overall, an excellent Telford show. Roll on 2017! Philip Edited by Prenton, Nov 20 2016, 01:21 AM.
