1/48 Hobby Boss A-10A "Warthog" (aka Thunderbolt II)

I've just started on a Hobby Boss kit for a group build on Flory models so I thought I'd enter this GB as well. I bought the "Eielson's Ice Hawgs" Two Bobs decals for it at the annual show in October and I have some aftermarket wheels, a seat and interior photoetch to add. I plan to build it in the 1986 "Spirit of Fairbanks" scheme.

Great to see you getting on board for this group build Ronan..and a very nice choice of subject too as I have a soft spot for the A-10..I have built the revell 1/48 which is an ok kit and also did a 1/72 heller in snow hog colours...still have a tamiya 48 scale in the stash which I now know I will have to pull out and have a look at as I read this thread with interest!!!

Yay! Love the A-10, and that's a lovely scheme too!

I did the HobbyBoss 2 seater in 1:48, and I presume that it's basically the same kit? If you have a couple of spruces of just ordinance, then it is!

One tip, when I built mine, I had big fit issues with the engine nacelles, just trying to get the panels on them to fit properly. I'd only got back into the hobby so I probably fecked them up, but keep an eye on them when you're doing them, and if you're not leaving the engine panels open, see if you can leave out some of the interior detail pieces, as I think having them inside is what caused the fit issues for me! It's a lovely kit though, looking forward to seeing this being built up...

Thanks for the tip Jason, it is the same kit, I actually got a deal on this kit and the two seater from Veteranus in the UK so I hope to build that one later too. I'll be sure to do a lot of dry fitting of the engine nacelles and I'll most likely leave out the unseen engine internals

Look forward to seeing this one and a plane I must get around to building sometime. :>

If you have five minutes, check out this video of an A-10 R/C Jet in action - the owner fitter a working Nerf gun in the nose....class! B-)

If it helps at all, here's my build thread from back in the day. You can see how much I fecked it up, due to lack of experience/patience and some panic! :)

Thanks guys and thanks for the link to your build Jason, I see how the engine pods were hard, I think leaving out some of the engine internals and lots of dry fitting will be the way to go.

Making progress on the A-10, nearly finished the cockpit, and I should be able to close up the fuselage tomorrow.

The resin wheels are done and I've started on the resin seat:

As the A-10A I'm building is from 1986, the GPS receivers on the nose and tail plus the vertical stabilisers had to go. The nose and tail ones were easy to remove but it took some sanding, filling and rescribing to get rid of the ones on the tail fins:

Thanks guys, I used a tip I saw on a JM Villalba video recently where he sprayed a matt coat first on the photoetch for the cockpit to get rid of the gloss look, then he brushed on Tamiya X-22 clear onto the first layer of the instrument layer which then acted as a glue to hold the top panel on, plus the X-22 then acted as glass for the instruments, it looks terrific in the metal, I'll be using the technique again!

Thanks Jason! Easy to do as well, I just brushed on some X-22 and sandwiched them together. I used gorrilla glue (the thin kind) for attaching most of the rest of the PE, with some bits done with superglue

So the side panels and all are pre-printed/coloured PE? And there I was thinking you had hand painted every switch, dial, button and screen :) Still looks awesome though
