I don't use much styrofoam but when I do I usually coat it in PVA and plaster so I can paint over it with no worries- some paints and glues dissolve styrofoam but you should be alright with acrylics. It would help if you showed what props you're talking about and why you want to harden them. |

iv made a base using gravel , and I'm making a new one with sand. I painted first with pva and stuck the gravel to it. But there's still a lot of loose bits on top. I was thinking of mixing some pva and water into a spray bottle then lightly spray over it . |

If it's flat I would just add plenty of PVA to the base and pour the sand on then just wait for it to dry and shake the loose stuff off. If there are bald spots repeat the process. However to my mind sand is very difficult to get to look like sand in scale. I think plaster looks much better. What kind of gravel did you use? |

For both of these bases I mixed up the ground work, crushed plaster in the first and soil from road works in the second, with plentyof PVA and then poured and shaped it on the base![]() T-62 by Pat McGrath, on FlickrAny excess PVA that bleeds out can be scooped up and used again. |

I'm with Pat... lotsa PVA, shake off loose stuff, repeat and repeat. Spray bottle of it will help, for sure. |

They look brilliant Pat , I'll give it a go. Iv made a couple of rocks etc with the blue Styrofoam , I might try covering them with pva once iv painted them , just to try make them a bit harder , I find its easy stuff to work with but also easily damaged. |
