Examples of Flying Boats and Float Planes.; Ones that I am aware of in model form

I started to try and write out a comprehensive listing of all float planes and flying boats that are available in kit form but the list would have been HUGE. I checked under the banner of Wikipedia on the topic of Flying Boats & Float planes and began trying to see if there was a kit for that aircraft. Wow I would have been at it for days.
So just a short listing of ones that I am aware of that are available in kit form or can be modified to fit the bill.

English;
AD Flying boat; various members of the DH Moth family; there were a good few Fairy aircraft, Fairy III; Campania; Flycatcher; Swordfish; Hamble Baby; Felixstowe had a well known range of large flying boats in WW1; Hawker produced a number of aircraft as well the Osprey to name but one; Saro, Saunders Roe and Short's produced a few as well. Saro Cloud; Saunders Roe SR/A1 jet propelled aircraft and of course the Short Mayo Composite and Sunderland; Sopwith had the Tabloid, Schneider, Baby. Supermarine had the Sea Lion (how appropriate); Walrus; Spitfire; S4; Stranaer; Finally there was the Blackburn Shark.

German;
Albatros W4; Hansa Brandenberg W12; W20; W29; Junkers F13; Arado 196; Heinkel He51; Ju 52; Dornier DoX. I'm sure that there are a lot more so feel fry to add to the listings, but remember that are available in kit form or can be modified to fit the bill. Other main manufactures would be; Blohm & Voss (BV222) + others. Frfiedrichshafen; Gotha and Heinkel families.

Italy;
The Italians had some lovely flying boats / float planes, really graceful looking. AT the moment I'll throw these two out there. Machi M5 and the Cant Z501. The Italians had a lot of aircraft that fall into the Schneider Trophy races many of which are in kit form. Look up the following Manufacturers for the availability ok kits Cant; Caproni; Macchi; Savoia- Marchetti.

Russia;
Grigorovich M5; SPL Hydroplane.

America;
Curtis SOC Seagull; PBY Catalina; Vought Kingfisher; Boeing Clipper; Curtis H16; Douglas World Cruiser; Grumman Duck & Albatros; Hughes Spruce Goose; Various members of the Cessna, Piper and Waco family of aircraft; Beech model 18

France
Where do you start, I think its best if I just give a guide to the main manufacturers and you can check these out yourselves for availability of kits
Bleriot; Breguet; FBA and Farman families; ditto the Latecoere & Loire-et-Olivier families.

Japan
Again a country that produced a great number o Flying Boats / Float planes. I see that Mike, the
Sligo Twiglet has already posted the Japanese float plane that he is going to build. Again due to the quantities produced and my drastic lack of knowledge of Japanese marine aircraft I am only going to post the main manufacturers; Aichi; Kawanishi and Yokosuka.

As I said earlier in the post please feel free to post any extra information that you may have.
Cheers
Joe M

Nice one Joe. :>

For America, in kit form you've also got big stuff like the Coronado, Mariner, Marlin and Tradewind to name just four.

Short answer - plenty of choice out there!

Ekranoplans count?

While technically it's a ground-effect vehicle, they do take off from and land on water so I'd rule them in. :>

Joe, you're leading this merry GB so over to you....

Austria-Hungary had their sexy Lohner flying boats and various floatplane versions of their fighters.. kitted in resin by Choroszy and CMR. There was also a floatie version of the venerable Taube.. and Joe, can't believe you didn't mention the Supermarine Southampton! Only €100 in 1/72 SilverWings resin! ;)

...they were using rake of Hansa-Brandenburg CC types as well, available in resin in 1:48 and 1:72 scale from Omega Models - including some bizzare and odd looking Russian/French/US flying boats

If the Mach 2 kit of the Blohm & Voss HA139 wasn't
a) Legendarily bad and
b) Ludicrously expensive
I'd be sorely tempted... it's a great looking aircraft, either with the huge degaussing ring or in it's civil Nordwind variant.

Mike - that's an amazing looking aircraft. Yes, I see what you mean about the kit of it - not marvellous, according to reviews on the 'net.

There is, apparently, (or was) a vac-form kit done by the German firm Airmodel.

Or you could do the HA 138 / BV 138, which is also a floatplane by Blohm and Voss. The kit (in 1:72) was done by Supermodel in the 1970's and re-boxed by Revell in 2005. I would imagine it should be easy enough to find, and not too expensive. Builds reasonably well, so far as I can see from the reviews....

I was going to have a tilt at von Banfield's Lohner as displayed in model form in the National Museum. Unfortunately the only kits are in resin and thus beyond my skills at present. One for the future perhaps... ;)
Completed group builds:

What-If 2017

Kits In Progress:

Revell 1/35 BTR-70
Dragon 1/72 T-34/76 Mod. 1942
Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Mk.XII

I believe Choroszy do that plane... and their resin kits are really, really good. I've got a couple of them on the go and thus far they've not really been any more difficult than short-run styrene..Might be time to take the plunge?

Because I'm all excited about this GB, here's another country and its machines..

Netherlands:
Fokker T.IV (incredibly ugly plane, in resin from MiKu... good luck finding it ;) ), Fokker C.XI, various variants only kit I can think of is a resin 1/350, so maybe not), Fokker T.VIII (MPM, 1/72), Ryan STM-S2 (floatie version of the gorgeous Ryan PT-22, kitted by Testors in 1/48 and a very nice kit it is too.. even comes with a sea base. Just keep Harrison Ford away from it.)

Thanks for the tip Mike, having looked into it they also do his Hansa-Brandenburg CC. Definitely interested in one or all of those :> but not for a while yet given other demands :bat:

Ekranoplans count?
Hi Barry,
Is it a plane or a bird No it Ekranoplan.

I was asked way back would this GB include Hovercraft and I said no! Its Flying boats or Float planes. I'm afraid that I have to stick with this principle. So I'm sorry but no Ekranoplans.
Cheers
