Although it could fit in the Film and TV thread I think it's worth a thread of its own. I saw it yesterday in the lighthouse cinema in Dublin. It's very good. My daughter wanted to see it because of Harry Styles but she thought it was an amazing film and now wants to build a spitfire - who knows if that will happen. Apparently the German planes are wrong which wasn't obvious to me. Everything else looks right. It prompted me to start rereading Dunkirk, Fight to the Last Man by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore I'd thoroughly recommend it. Very tense, very atmospheric, not much dialogue and a great score. Very different to the 1958 version with John Mills and Richard Attenborough which is also a good film Edited by Parkadge, Jul 24 2017, 11:06 AM.

Thanks Pat - I definitely must go. (I had seen the trailer, and it's true - the 109's are wrong. It looks like the Spanish Buchon's have been pressed into service again, perhaps. I will know when I see the film - hopefully next Sunday, when herself is gone off with the girl guides to a camp. )Philip Edited by Prenton, Jul 24 2017, 01:10 PM.

Yeah they are the Spanish built HA-1112's of Battle of Britain movie fame. They're Spanish license built Me109G-2s with Hispano Suiza engines. I know I'm an anorak, but In these days of CGI it could't have been that hard to have a few authentic looking 109Es. This annoys me almost as much as seeing Patton Tanks dressed up as Panzers in movies, grrrr. (which is one of the things I loved about Firefly btw, particularly the sequence where they take out the Tiger tank) Edited by Marklo, Jul 25 2017, 08:33 AM.

Have you seen the movie Marklo? To compare it to the battle of the bulge movie is very unfair. One of the strengths of the movie is that there is no CGI. Do you mean Fury? Not Firefly |

Yep Marklo - thought so. (no problem being an anorak about 109's - join the club!) I have a couple of kits of the HA-112 by AZ models, and managed to photograph them in situ in Madrid last summer in the air museum. Must find the photos and put them up in the walkaround section..... Philip |

No I haven't seen the movie, but I am looking forward to it. Anything with Kenneth Brannagh in it has to be good. It represents one of the most perplexing (and unexplained) mysteries of WWII, i.e why didn't the Germans finish off the BEF when they had the chance. I wasn't criticizing the movie per se (I'm not a big fan of preconceived opinions), merely expressing one of my many pet hates, vis a vis aunthenticity If I watch the Blue Max or the Battle of Britain, I'm afraid the colour schemes and engine housings do jar for me wheras Tora, Tora, Tora or Fury (Yes I was getting confused with the Tank) I don't, just me I guess.I can also be engaged in hour long discussions about the Lord of the Rings books vs the Movie (where were the Rangers at Helm's Deep, why did they add the silly sequence where Aragorn gets knocked over the clif, Why did they have to dumb down the Ent's motivations for going to war, Why didn't they do the scouring of the shire, etc, etc)I might add that I did thoroughly enjoy the battle of the bulge and have seen it many times. I did build couple a models of the Mezec about 30 years ago the Avia-199 Mezec Afair I finsshed one of them in an Israeli air defense scheme, can't remember if it was the single seater of the two seater ( I built one of each). TBH when I think of it, I can't think of a single movie I liked him in, but he does lend an air of class to the proceeding ![]()

Pat, Sebag-Montefiore's book is an excellent treatment of events surrounding Dunkirk. I'd also thoroughly recommend the BBC's 3-part drama documentary if you haven't already seen it. |

I've read his Young Stalin, which was very good. I do find Dunkirk intrigues me so, having so affected the outcome of the war on the western front, I must put this one on my list of books to read (Although it is a very long list, I think I have about 140 books on my Kindle atm, probably about half of which are history books) Edited by Marklo, Jul 26 2017, 04:23 PM.

I agree about Hugh Sebag-Montifore book, have read it and it is very good indeed. Went to film this evening. V good enjoyed it, and the music in it really set the atmosphere. |

In a strange turn of events I may have managed to persuade my other half to go to see the movie with me, so here's hoping (the last movie we saw together was the third lord of the rings and as it's basically a series of (loud) set piece battles, which didn't go down all that well, as she is slightly claustrophobic and dysphonic) This may be a strange question for a war movie, but is it violent? (i.e. Saving private Ryan gritty realism) or noisy (lots of battle scenes)? |

Having seen it, I would not class it as really violent, no scenes of terrible violence, noisy, as I believe it did not need extreme violence to portray the misery etc of war. |

No real scenes of graphic violence. You do see some men getting shot. Parts of it are quite noisy for very brief moments -creaming stukas and the Score can be quite intense,- one of the veterans who attended the premiere in London said that being on the beach at Dunkirk was less noisy than the film. |
