Pirates of the Caribbean are amazing Disney movies all based on the adventures of Jack Sparrow and his beloved Black Pearl.

More information on these hilarious movies can be found online

http://pirates.disney.com/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_(film_series)

Revell have once again increased their tie in within Disney and produced another Special Edition model of the infamous Black Pearl.

https://www.revell.de/en/products/model-building/ships/sailing-ships/id/05699.html

I was very lucky to be given this kit as a present from my family over Christmas and just couldn’t help but get stuck straight in.

In true Revell tradition, the box is huge and probably bigger than required. Don’t get me wrong there is a huge amount of plastic and this is as normal for Revell, loosely placed inside the box in plastic bags. Thankfully I am once again lucky and none of this has been damaged as can occur with this style of packing in such a big box.

So how much plastic is there, a lot B-) . 23 sprues of grey plastic including the hull, stand and sails plus 1 clear plastic. There is also 4 types of string provided for the various ringing and ropes.

The detailing of the plastic is amazing, the planking effect on the decks and hull in my opinion is first class, as is the sculpting of the intricate ornate designs and figurines.

Two versions of the Pearl can be built from the instructions, now before anyone gets excited there is not different versions based on each movie or battle damage, sad I know, but just simple gun ports closed with cannons stowed or gun ports open and cannon brought to bear. I will of course be building this in the latter option. With that in mind this build becomes a little more tricky as once again I have interiors that will be on display. So after special consultation with the shipping expert here (although this is well above his normal scale) a plan of attack has been formulated (ok so it’s not Jacks style of winging it, but hopefully the end result will be the same).

While I haven’t decided yet if I will eventually set this into some Caribbean water base for the final display or leave it just on the stand, but to help the build and follow the instructions the first steps was of course to build the stand. Now I’m not following all the instructions steps in order of course (bit of Jack, planning here) so I can build up sections to ease painting but the stand was.

Since then I have been building a little each day, building up details and sub- assemblies so when you see photos of decks in place some of these are only dry fitted.

More pictures of each stage of build so far can be seen on flickr https://flic.kr/s/aHsmcLD81x or my Facebook page

That brings the build up to date and now I have to build up the 32 cannons.

Thanks guys.

I’m not so much worried about the part count as that pretty average or even low side for my usual kits, but yeah the rigging is going to be interesting. Not sure if my sailing and rope skills will come in handy at this size, I’m thinking not and that it more sewing skills I need.

Slow but steady progress this week.

The little skiff went together very well, with limited clean up. The kit has plenty of accessories for this , oars, rum barrel, folded mast, gaff to name a few but these will be added once painted.

The cannons, there are 32 of these to build and so far I am a quarter of the way through. Each is made up of 7 individual parts (Stool bed and Quoin, 2 side brackets each with all the loops and ringbolts attached, fore axletree and trucks, rear axletree and trucks, barrel and finally the muzzle) the detailing is nice but the most flash of the kit so far. For the majority of these only the barrel will really be visible protruding from the gun ports as they will be below decks, some though will be on upper decks. However, all still they need a complete tidy up or best I can, so not to remove any detailing. When each is complete they still pivot on the trunnion, which is nice, but looking at the photo I suspect I could be revisiting one or two for a bit of extra tidy up.

So made good but slow and steady progress on the Pearl this week, might not look like it but that a number of nights work there with multiple layers of paint both underneath and on top of the main decks, the stairs, skiff and capstan all still dry fitted at this stage after painting.

Don't know if it the way I'm painting or just this particular Vallejo Black Grey paint but it does seems to change shades from a dark black to a dark grey depending on the light and angle you look at it. Doesn't show very well in the photos though.

Just hope it good enough to stop any baseball bats heading my direction any time soon  ;)

Last post on this for a bit as really need to get cracking on the Vietnam GB.

First up is the base coating of the upper hull, this has spent 4 sessions in the paint booth, to ensure a nice even coverage of the black grey paint, which is very deceptive as you look at in certain light or angles and it appears greyer and in others blacker. Good built in weathering but I’m happy now with this section of base coat.

Next up for that section will be the windows and molded scroll work to be dry brushed gold and the cabin roof a paint of brass

The inside of the lower hull has had 2 sessions at the spray booth but I’m wondering why myself as very little will be seen through the cannon portholes.

The separate scroll work has had a lovely coat of metallic Gold applied and really pops now , not sure the pictures do it justice.

Don’t you just love and hate what the camera shows you on the big screens, the figure head had a nice coat of pale blue grey, and looked good in the flesh but I see that one side needs a little extra clean up. No prizes for telling me which one

And last a bit of Khaki for the rope on the ships wheel.

Hope everyone likes it and comments as always gratefully received.

Not the greatest of pictures as this black grey is a nightmare to photograph, but the base coat on the pearl lower hull is finally complete. Next will be to throw on a coat of clear and dry brush the scroll work at the back.
