Irish Army Panhard AML-60 CS

Takom 1/35 Panhard AML-60

I believe that this is a kit of a vehicle that needs no introduction to a fair few people here. The Takom kit is the first IM kit of this widespread armoured car, to the best of my knowledge.

I started this kit on the day of Hurricane Ophelia. The build itself was fairly simple, although the wheels are oddly attached, and the upper section of the hull requires very careful application.

Had to take off the mounts for the storage rack. I don't think any Irish Panhards had it at all.

Posted Image
I managed to not remove any of the bolts from the engine.

Posted Image
The exhaust system is a bit of an odd fit, but it looks the part.

Posted Image
Added the rear plate and the rear portion of the wheel fairings. I didn't know it then, but was the start of a fit problem.

Posted Image
I definitely skipped a few steps. The kit was fairly quick to put together, although it could be tricky.

Posted Image
The turret was very easy to make. I never realised how large the hatch was on the AML-60.

The rear of the hull definitely has a problem with flying away. There was an awful lot of work to get right. I ended up fixing the rear of the hull by careful clamping and gluing over the course of a few hours.

I was unsure of what colour to paint it. At one stage I had it painted Tamiya XF-81 Dark Green, until I seen some photos from Simon aka TrooperN. This led me to Mr Hobby H309 Green FS34079. This colour is close enough to some photographed examples. I also made two number plates for it, and painted them as NZH 12.

The Trenching planks where sponge chipped with black and a silver colour to give it a used look.

I used some Citadel Badab Black wash, to darken the vision blocks.

Posted Image
I chopped down the long barrels on the machine guns and drilled out the muzzles.

Posted Image
The exhaust was painted in several different red and brown colours to match real life examples.

During the weathering stage I used the Dark Earth, Mud, and Dust Oilbrushers. I really like these things. I also used European Dust from the old Mig production range.

I will be posting the finished build later on, I just have to get some matt varnish.

That's lovely, Mick. I seem to remember seeing those in a Easter Sunday (or was it St Patrick's Day?) parade in the city centre when I was young......

Thanks Pat, Dermot, and Philip.

I would have similar memories of seeing Panhards in the Newbridge Paddy's day parades in the nineties.
