Yes, that's so - we have the place booked. Unfortunately, the Vegan café has taken the early part of the day again, so we are on in the afternoon, from 3 till 5.

Hi Guys,
Looks like I will be the first person to cry off this Saturday. Have to wire in a 3 way dimmer switch and a new central light, followed up with a clean up in the attic as we have someone coming in on Monday to insulate it. Cannot allow the stash to be manhandled around!
Hope you guys have a good time on Saturday.

Strange meeting - first the armour outnumbered the planes and then the sci fi outnumbered the armour

It was an enjoyable if small gathering. Sorry I didn't get a shot of everything- especially Ken's Hurricane and Vincent's TIE Interceptor. We were squeezed into a corner in the exchange and I couldn't move around the table :(

Yes, Sean. It was indeed. I intend to have a serious chat with the folks in the Exchange about it - when we had booked, weeks ago, it was just us and the pop-up vegan café. But there was a market in pretty much all of the main space when we arrived, and the café had been relegated to the smaller space. We had to be content with one table and some chairs, in a far corner. Not really good enough.....

Luckily, it was a small meeting - only 8 people were in attendance - Pat, Gerard, Ken, Sean, Vincent, Mark, Graham and myself. Our lowest number, I reckon, for well over a year. So we just about fitted in to the space, which was not well lit either (I had to get the volunteer to replace a bulb in the one light for the area).

Still, as you can see from Pat's photos, there were some very interesting models on show. Lots of chat too, mostly about Telford, and ideas of how we might organise a group booking / trip for 2014.

The next meeting will be on 21st December. We will meet at 12.15 in the Porterhouse, for our annual pub crawl / pre-Christmas drinks and chips. No need to have a formal meeting in the Exchange before that. Usually, after a chinwag over a beer and some chips or a burger etc., we drop into Marks and then up to Walshie's.

I will book dates for January and February with the Exchange folks over the next fortnight.

REMINDER

The Dublin Chapter will have its usual pre-Christmas get-together in the Porterhouse, on Parliament Street, Dublin 2
(just around the corner from the Exchange and just up from Capel Street Bridge into Temple Bar)
on next Saturday, December 21st, from 12.15 pm

We just meet up in the pub, where there are lots of craft beers etc., some good food (the chips in the bucket come to mind!) and - for those driving - reasonable coffee.
We usually stay there for about an hour or so, for a chat, and then the more hardy of us continue on down to Marks Models in Hawkins Street, and afterwards - for those even hardier - up to Paul Walsh's place in Blessington Street, there we have a look at "what Santa might be bringing the boys" (as the ad says).

All are welcome (including potential members)

Next Dublin Chapter meeting is confirmed for 18th January (Saturday) from 11 am till 1 pm, in the Exchange.

There will be a presentation by Joe Moran on stretching sprue and other ways of making rigging / aerials etc. If you mised it the last time (back in November 2012), you should really try to get to it this time around, and if you were there the last time you know that it will be well worth seeing again!

Some shots from the demo last time are here:-

http://forum.ipmsireland.com/topic/8199887/2/?x=30

Amazingly, that's at the start of page 2 of this thread, which is now 12 pages long. My post showing his presentation was post no. 31, while this is post no. 331 on the same thread......... So much has happened in not much more than a year.... ;)

Hi Guys,
Besides the rigging demo if we have the time I'll include a quick demo on how you can achieve that streaky effect that was on the Fokker Triplanes, and the early Fokker D.V11.
Also may try and show my take on wooden props.
See ya all Saturday.
Cheers

For those of you attending the meeting on Saturday, if you let me know what you are proposing to build for the WW1 GB I will photocopy what rigging info I have and bring it along.
Just must know by tomorrow night so I can photocopy on Friday.

Looks like it could be a bumper attendance at the Dublin Chapter meeting on Saturday.

I'll be there with membership cards for those who have asked me to bring them along ;) Anyone else who wants to pay their subs and get membership
cards double quick, just let me know (by PM or by e-mail, please - I don't know the real identity of those people with obscure handles on this forum), before
3pm on Friday, which should give me time to print them off and laminate them!

Main business, as you can see from the above posts, will be Joe's lead in to the WW1 Group Build, with his demo on sprue stretching...and more....remember
sticks and stings (in this case stretched sprue or wire strings) rule! If he wants to streak some Fokkers, then that's fine too!

I have checked the Exchange website, and it looks like the Vegan café has gone, so our only companions on the day (apart from an art exhibition) will be the
Yoga class. I am sending on a special request tomorrow to the Exchange volunteers to leave the small space (the one with the window to Exchange street) free
for us on the day - that gives the Yoga folks the larger space. The Yoga folks - unlike the vegan café - don't need tables....

Looking forward to it!

Philip

Excellent Dublin Chapter meeting today - a bumper attendance indeed, with 19 modellers present, despite the very inclement weather outside.

The main event was the demo by Joe Moran, on stretching sprue, and using such stretched sprue and other things - notably wire - to make rigging, aerials etc. Joe also
demonstrated how to paint the Fokkers their distinctive "Fokker green and linen" camo. He also gave us a demo on how to paint realistic wooden propellors.

Here are two views of some of those in attendance during the meeting:-

(a couple of folks were out of shot, or had not arrived at this stage)

Here is Joe busy stretching sprue:-

Warming up the sprue on the candle:-

And stretching it:-

He showed how you could do this to get very fine pieces, which would be ideal for 1/72nd rigging on biplanes, and also some slightly larger pieces, suitable for 1/48th scale
rigging or aerials on 1/35th armour, or other things, such as gear levers for cars, joysticks for planes etc.

Joe then demonstrated how to take rolls of fine wire and straighten them using a steel rule and a piece of flat glass, so that they are nice and straight, before cutting and
placing the wire as rigging on a biplane.

Posted Image

Joe very generously had packets of wire, in two thicknesses, which he kindly donated to all present.

On the painting demo, Joe took a piece of Fokker wing, and, during the meeting, painted it up twice to get the characteristic diagonal pattern. He informed us that,
on the real thing, this was done on the linen fabric using 6 inch brushes. He used Master Kit acrylics for this, but noted that the green colour in the Mister Kit set (called
Fokker Green) could be replicated quite easily by greens in other ranges, suchas Vellejo Russian green.

Here is Joe working on the wing early in the meeting, followed by the second coat later on.

Joe had brought a couple of sample planes from his collection, including a Fokker Triplane from Jasta 2, to show us how it should look when finished.

On the painting of propellors to simulate real wood, Joe had a number of samples which he passed around. He outlined his technique for these tiny items - a base
coat of white, followed by a flesh type tone (he was using Vellejo Gamecolour "dwarf skin"). Then, when this is dry, he puts on very thin slivers or lines of masking
tape (Tamiya) and fills in the non-masked areas with a mid brown colour (Vallejo "beastly brown"). To avoid ridges, he suggested removing the masking tape before
the latter paint dries. Then once it is fully dry, he puts on Tamiya Clear Orange, as a kind of varnish.

Here are the results:-

Apart from the demo, some of the folks brought along finished models or WIP's for show. I missed a few of these, but did manage to get a shot of two lovely sci-fi
pieces by Sean (35th Scale) Mullarkey (Battlestar Galactica and a Babylon 5 Starfury):-

Posted Image

Joe had arranged to provide scale plans and other details to a number of folks, as Des mentions, for their entries in the group build. So there was a lot of exchange of these
plans, from Joe's extensive collection, as well as a lot of advice given once the formal demo was completed.

Many thanks, Joe, for the demo and for all of the advice. This group build is looking like it's going to be a lot of fun!

Finally, as mentioned in my post above, the occasion of the meeting allowed me to get a number of subscription renewals from existing members - 9 in fact - for whom I had arranged
membership cards in advance. I was also handed three new membership applications, and two requests for forms, so that's five new members within three weeks of the new year.
(Welcome lads!).

(Pat McGrath took a lot of photos of the demo, and as he was sitting closer, he may well have some better ones than mine to show in a later post.)

The next meeting is scheduled for February 15th - see you then!

Philip
