I think that's an excellent idea Pat. Sorry but I can't make this Saturday. However, will be at ALSAA the week after on the club table and will make the 'festive' Christmas meeting as well. Cheers, Dermot |

Sorry we will miss you, Dermot. Looking forward to the ALSAA gig - perhaps without snow this time! Ken and I are currently working on Pat's idea for a couple of notices for the next meeting. After all, based on my experience over in Telford, it should not be such a huge problem (I hope!). But my laminator only does A4. Will that do, Pat? Philip |

I'm sure A4 will be a perfect size. If we could get the new address of the forum onto the poster perhaps, that would also be nice. We should definitely get one up to Paul Walsh as well.

Well you both missed a great meeting. Joe Moran's demo on rigging a WW1 biplane was very informative and we all learned some new techniques useful for other areas of modelling too. He handed out a sheet of tips and techniques which I'll scan and add later. We also got to see some of the purchases from Telford as well as a some models![]() Untitled-1 by parkadge, on Flickr Joe Stretching sprue ![]() ipmsnov 013 by parkadge, on Flickr Demonstrating why an optivisor is essential for this work - Joe may or may not have been holding aloft a piece of wire-I couldn't see it ![]() ipmsnov 023 by parkadge, on Flickr ![]() ipmsnov 022 by parkadge, on Flickr ![]() ipmsnov 021 by parkadge, on Flickr As we were facing onto the street we got a lot of interest from passers by- the women generally had a wry smile on their faces while their accompanying men generally had a wistful expression as if to say "I wish I could hang out there instead of shopping"

Thanks for those photos, Pat. You got in ahead of me (and thankfully managed to get a few shots of the models of the later show and tell, which I missed). The star of the meeting, though, was undoubtedly Joe Moran. To an audience of 11 members and one (potential) new member, Joe was billed as giving a demo on rigging WW1 planes. He did a lot more. He said that he was not a fan of the stretch fabric thread that you get from knitting and stitching shops (my wife will not be pleased!), and he extolled the virtues of stretched sprue and of metal wire (the latter apparently available from where he works - I hope Lennox Chemicals of JFK Drive, D.12 - ph 01 4552201 - gives you staff rates, Joe!). But Joe went further, and gave us a live demo on how to stretch sprue, not just for rigging but for other things too. Complete with candle and bits of sprue, he stretched, and stretched and stretched. And he told us that the secret of getting triangular-section stretched sprue, and rectangular-section stretched sprue, and square-section stretched sprue, and even aerofoil-section stretched sprue, as well as the more normal circular section - anyway, you get the picture - is simply to shape or sand the sprue before you stretch it. Then, when you stretch it, you get the shape you want, but in long and narrow form..... Simple, but clever! Then he cut the extremely fine wire, rolled it on a glass tile with a steel rule to get it to stay straight, glued it with simple PVA and suspended it so that gravity took hold and showed that it would hang straight (yes, Pat, you would indeed need the Optivisor to see if it actually was there, but I saw it (I think....!)). He had a partly rigged IAC Walrus as an example of how to do the rigging.... ![]() Here are some of the photos that I have, to complement those that Pat took at the meeting. ![]() (heating the sprue) ![]() (stretching the sprue) ![]() (hanging the sprue) ![]() (measuring the wire) ![]() (now this is where you need an optivor to see where the wire is) Thanks, Joe, for an excellent presentation. The next Dublin meeting will be held on 15th December. This will be our usual pre-Christmas session - a short meeting to discuss kits we have, want, or wish to show, followed by our Christmas lunch in the Porterhouse (when that opens at 12), and then, by tradition, we have a brisk walk up to Blessington Street to "see what Santa might be bringing the boys" [a prize to the first one who gets this reference!]. (Paul is no Santa, of course, but he has bargains in the shop, and is prepared to haggle/do a deal)..... But in the meantime, there is the outing to the Aircraft Fair at ALSAA in Dublin Airport on 25th November - a couple of folks have already volunteered to man the table. If you want to come along, and are willing to give a half hour or an hour of your time to manning our table, please send me an e-mail (my addy is on the contacts page of the main website, if you haven't it already) or just post up a PM to me on the forum. You can even bring a kit or two from your stash and try to sell it there on our table. (that is, except you, Jason, as you haven't a stash, well..... not really!!) In the meantime - happy modelling! Just a quick note that if anyone from Dublin is trying to source the fine wire that Joe was using during his demo then you should check out Beads & Bling on the quays, right next to the Ha'penny bridge. While Steve was getting himself some tiny rope Paul and I were amazed to find the wire hanging on the back wall. It's available in different colours and diameters. They also sell a range of different chain which would be handy for tanks and such. |

Hia guys, back on the forum at last. Sorry I couldn't make November, and I won't be at Decembers either. The overtime at work has kicked in, and guess who's working that Saturday. I'll keep upto date with the forum. |

Pretty certain it's Saturday the 15th. Normally for the 'Christmas' meeting we meet at 11 at The Exchange and chat for a bit, and then move on to the Porterhouse for a couple of drinks and maybe up to a model shop afterwards. J. |

Hi Guys, I should have enough fine wire in two different gauges for all at the next meeting, FOC of course, well it is nearly Christmas. Just remember the demo was about how to glue and stretch sprue and fine wirem, not how to hang it. As an example it took me an hour to fit four pieces to the Triplane of Manfed von R, two rigging wires to the front of the cockpit area and two aerlion control cables to the rear of the same area. Patience is required, a lot of it! If you have any questions contact ne thro the forum or at the next meeting. Now how do I get super glue of the back of the cat! Good by yawl! Joe M |
