Thanks for the kind comments, Pat. Yes, as Michael correctly surmised, it is lots (and lots) of Tamiya tape. some patience and then some more patience...... Actually, I started the kit some time back in 2012, a Special Hobby kit of the Stuka A, as used in the Spanish Civil War, for a group build on Britmodeller. However, I made a number of mistakes in terms of masking, and also in using Xtracrylics for the paint-job, and eventually did not finish it on time for the GB when I discovered that the paint in question is not great and lifts after masking... http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234923469-special-hobby-ju-87a-172/?hl=prenton So it sat on a shelf for a looong time. I took it out this summer and cleaned all of the paint off it, all the way down to the plastic. I then re-painted it using Tamiya acrylics in my airbrush - two of the top colours are pretty closely matched with Tamiya shades and are therefore out of the glass jar, while the brown is a mix (to get the three RLM colours - 61, 62 and 63). As you can see, I roughly worked out the camo pattern, using the wide Tamiya tape cut with a very sharp knife, to get a general approximation of the final pattern. The Tamiya paint didn't lift off at all, thankfully. (Lesson learnt - don't buy Xtracrylics!) What I found eye-catching was the pattern that the Condor Legion / Luftwaffe used at the time - very striking. The canopy was done after the main camo - I bought a set of Montex masks, and found them easier than the usual Eduard ones. (Hannants have the full range) The rudder has already been painted in white, and I have masked off the St Andrew's Cross and painted it black (as the decals in this area could be problematic). There is still quite a bit of work to do - a couple of clean ups around the nose area, and on the wheel spats underneath, then there will be one more coat of Future, the decals, another coat of Future, and then some weathering with washes....and finally I will fit the aerial mast (already painted), and the machine gun (likewise) and do the aerials.... Probably another month or so - this time I am taking it slowly. Cheers, Philip |

What presumably scarey kitchen product did you use to strip the paint ? Was it 100% effective ? |

John - just Tamiya Acrylic thinners - No 20A. I used a large number of Q-Tips. And a LOT of water afterwards.....(on the 100% effectiveness...well, I did need to use a scriber or the back of a knife in a couple of out of the way places to get stubborn bits out. But the bulk of the paint came off pretty easily - which of course shows that Xtracrylics doesn't adhere all that well) It was then carefully washed in soapy water, with a clean kitchen scrubber (one of the blue-non-stick types), wiped off with clean water and kitchen paper, and then allowed it to dry in a warm room. Usually these stories involved oven cleaner / ammonia , plastic bags and gas masks !Potentially great way to refurbish a badly built kit bought on Ebay etc but I guess you'd need to know what you're doing . Think there was a thread about it on ISM . |

Another great turn-out with 17 + some future members when they grow up. Lots on the table too with subs obviously well represented. Some ancient Vikings ready to do battle with a pack of Raptors, lots of AAA and the usual assortment of wingy things who all escaped un damaged, a pair of PBRs and some motor bikes. And the big Paratrooper. Vinny was busy with the camera so I'm sure he'll post some pics later |
