I'm in Athy Jason, but would have had to get the car sorted anyway. It was the alternator...now replaced temporarily with a lower-power one while mine gets a make-over. |

Sorry you couldn't make it Sean it was a great meeting with 19 in attendance. I was looking forward to seeing your Vehicles - with the nightfighter GB it was mostly planes. Great talk on the joys and pitfalls of resin kits by Andy and great chat all around. Where are the photos guys? ![]() Edited by Parkadge, Feb 17 2013, 11:58 AM.

19? That must be a record! I was kicking myself..I've not made one other than the Christmas lunch, in about 4 months and was al set for yesterday. And no Donncha, it's not a Focus, but is a Ford: in fairness 8 years old and 188k KM on the clock and it's only in recent weeks it's causing me grief. 3 weeks ago need a new drive shaft, last week the main fuse-board went on fire and that turns out to have been a symptom of the alternator problem. €1k this month... :-( But yesterday wasn't a complete waste of time...just going now to upload photos to start a build log down in the sci-fi section. And as Pat says: where are the photos from yesterday? |

It was a very good meeting. I really liked the nightfighter group build kits, and the 1:48 eagle was a sizeable beast - how big is it in 1:32? Too many good things to mention really, but its always good to see so many people out. |

Hi Andy, Really enjoyed the resin demo. Looked up the two kits I have, which are complete kits including struts props engines etc. They are for the Hansa Brandenberg W20 and the larger W12. They don't look to bad,the instructions are zilch, no decals and no makers name so I dont really know who made them. Both are in a mid green colour and were made by the same resin company. I have attached photo's of them below. I purchased them about 20 years ago or their abouts. WIll bring them to the next meeting. Not so scarey of resins now thanks to you. But always remember, Stick and String Rule Joe ![]()

Pat, I agree - really excellent meeting - lots of models in evidence, and a great talk from Andy on resin kits. Drum Roll: Taaaaaa Daaaa Thanks, Andy! Here he is, in full flow:- And the capacity crowd listened intently (with one member actually taking notes as Andy went along....) He illustrated the types of resin kit or conversion you could get by handing round some aircraft wings and some radomes that you substitute for inferior kit parts, and also he showed us some VERY INTERESTING kits that one can get (apparently) from the Far East. Here Mark can be seen feeling the quality of the moulding on one such kit :-Similar kits, once painted up, can look like this:- (Unfortunately, our normally resident glamour photographer missed the meeting. Perhaps he was with some 1:1 scale models?) Andy gave tips on the tools to be used, showing us one of his razor saws, and pointed out the need for dust masks when cutting and (particularly) sanding. He also outlined some of the pitfalls, noting the brittle nature of resin, especially the smaller parts, and the need to wash all items carefully and then prime them before even thinking of adding paint. The competing merits of car body primer and plastic primer were discussed, and he got us all going with the tale of when he used Tamiya fine primer (and what it can do to kitchen worktops, especially when seen from a lower height than himself!) Of course, the meeting also had its share of model kits on show, both completed and wip's. Courtesy of Joe "sticks and strings" Moran, who took a pile of photos that he has passed on to me, I will give some examples in the next post.... Philip Edited by Prenton, Oct 16 2017, 11:24 AM.

As promised, those of us who had been involved in the Nightfighter Group Build brought along our work, so that it could be seen in the flesh. Out intrepid host for the GB, Dermot, even manufactured a suitable backdrop in front of which we could display our models:- The highlight of these models, at least in my own opinion, was the Bf 110 that had been completed by Jason. Just look at the details:- More generally, it was evident that there were some themes running through the display. One was the fact that nightfighting was not just done by specialised aircraft designed for that purpose, but involved aircraft thrown into the fray as the need arose. There were trios of single seater fighters turned nightfighters from the Luftwaffe:- And there were also some from the allies:- Here are a few, close up:- A head to head of Hurricanes:- And a pair of Wurgers:- Some of us, including myself and Joe, have still a few kits to finish in this theme. Joe's Strutter: and my Heinkel 219:- (and, you see, it's NOT a tail sitter!!) But not everyone was involved in the Nightfighter GB, and they also brought some stuff to see and talk about. That will be the subject of my next post, again using photos taken by Joe. Philip Edited by Prenton, Oct 16 2017, 11:35 AM.

As promised, a selection of other fine work on display at the meeting yesterday:-![]() ![]() including this WIP from Vincent, another one of those "luft '46" creations, this time a ramjet:- But not everyone had planes there this time. There was a jeep (at least, Sean, I hope it isn't a Humvee!!! )and I am told that this fine vehicle, complete with some more of Steve's excellent stowage, was used in Operation Herrick:- ![]() ![]() (Possibly one of those new Airfix kits?) There was also a small U-boat in evidence, by Simon Hand, very nicely weathered:- Talking of new Airfix kits, Vincent came in with two of the recently-released Vampires, that he had picked up from Marks Models in Rathcoole on his way to the meeting . He let us know that he had left two more in stock for anyone else in attendance. Vincent then decided to take the major pieces off the sprue (he had come armed with a sprue cutter) and did a mock up. And nice it looks too! So, that's the photos - thanks Joe for taking them. The meeting also gave me an opportunity to hand out membership cards to those who had come armed with their membership subscriptions. Thanks, guys. All the money has now been handed to Alan, the Treasurer. We all agreed that the next meeting will not be on the usual third Saturday of the month, as that Saturday in March is the bank holiday weekend around St. Patrick's Day. I will try, therefore, for Saturday 23rd March, and will let everyone know, here on the forum, once the date is confirmed. Mark has promised to give us a demo then on the use of plaster in making model bases. Happy Modelling! Philip Edited by Prenton, Oct 16 2017, 11:42 AM.

Nice photos Philip and thanks for posting. And great demo Andy, really informative and...educational If I can, I might bring some sort of table covering for the next meeting. I always find the mix of graffiti/art/doodling/dried tea/etc on the tables in the Exchange a bit on the grotty side. Also, they don't really help as a background when photgraphing the models. Speaking of models, there were also these two fast movers from Ken and myself being built for the F-15 single type GB on Britmodeller. Ken's is the mighty 1/48 in the back. ![]() Until the next meeting, happy sticking. Dermot |
