Yes indeed - Sean is correct. It was a very good and action-packed meeting.

In attendance were Simon (Nolan), Dermot, Ken, Don, Joe, Pat, Jason, Gerry, Paul, Sean M, Mark, Sean W, Steve, Andy and myself, together with a guest in
the shape of John Wallace (hope you liked what you saw, John, and that you'll be back). That's a total of sixteen, which (as Sean says) is on a par with most
meetings these days in Dublin. Some of the regulars, as noted above, were unavoidably absent, so it could have been more!

The main planned business was a demo from Mark on how to make bases using plaster of Paris. My photos concentrated on this excellent demo, and I was
rather busy thereafter taking membership subs (five members paid up - thanks, guys!), dealing with queries and making announcements about the nationals
poster (which will be up, as Sean says, very soon, once the sponsor's logo has been put on it), and discussing things with various folks about future field trips.
So - sorry that I missed the opportunity to take photos of the many models on show - these filled two tables! Hopefully, someone else managed to take
some shots, which they can post. (You can see a few of them in the background in some of the shots below)

Also there were examples of Steve's new range of sci-fi crates and other items (which are really EXCELLENT!). You can see something of them on our Facebook page:-
https://www.facebook.com/groups/154243277932214/#!/groups/128545347164792/

I did manage to take just two photos of models. The first is this very well weathered and finished Lancaster by Gerry - from the Revell kit, in 1/72nd scale:-

And Jason brought along his WIP B-17 "Memphis Belle", which he is bulding in a group build over on Britmodeller:-

So - to Marks's demo. This is the first of a two parter, concentrating on the making of bases. Saturday's meeting showed how you actually made the bases,
while the demo at the next meeting will show how to paint them up, put realistic finishes (grass, tarmac, concrete etc) on them etc.

Mark started by showing us the materials. This is the plaster of Paris he uses (which is quite inexpensive - purchasable at many outlets. He had a small 1 kg
bag with him, but recommended the 5 kg bag from Evans).

Posted Image

Mark uses these plastic plates as moulds (8 for a tenner or so in Homestore + More), as they have a good shape to accept the mixture, and a lip to contain it.

Posted Image

The plaster is then mixed with water in small buckets (or other similar containers), to the consistency of cream.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Then poured into the moulds:

Posted Image

They are then tapped a few times to allow for any air bubbles to rise to the top (which will be the bottom of the base when it is is set)

When dry - takes about a day, at maximum - the bases are set and can be released from the moulds and handled. They are surprisingly heavy, and are
sufficiently sized to take a 1/72nd plane or a 1/35th tank. Here is Ken trying out an example (which Mark made earlier) on his WIP Boston:-

Posted Image

Mark noted that the same method can be used to mould sheets of plaster (on a flat base), which can then be cut up to make walls or even buildings for a diorama.
Effects can also be put in, when moulding, to simulate waves, mud, runway joints, etc, or they can be sculpted on top of the bases. Mark mentioned the potential of
using the old Airfix Sunderland kit as a mould to put in a wave effect on a base before it dries.....

Next meeting, Mark promises to show how to put edges to the bases, and to put the finishes on top.

When the meeting ended, some of us had a coffee in the Porterhouse, and then went down the quays to meet up with Simon (Dasike), who was
manning the fort in Hawkins Street:-

Posted Image

When I got there, I met up with Simon Nolan and Sean W, and we all had a bit of a natter with Dasike about the new releases that had come in to stock.
I don't know if anyone made it up town to Walshie's later - I had to meet up with SWMBO and have lunch. (Then back to the car - parked, as always, in
the grounds of Collins Barracks - many thanks for that most useful tip, Murfv!).

Philip

(Incidentally, I did pop in to Forbidden Planet on the way - only one (proper) modelling kit was in evidence, a Revell "Kazon Raider" ship. There were, however,
lots of die cast and plastic examples of various spaceships and figures, for those into that kind of thing. Lots of kids there, which is in marked contrast to the
more "mature" shoppers in the standard modelling shops, such as Marks and Walshie's. A lesson there, perhaps?)

NEXT MEETING

I have just got confirmation of our booking from the folks in the Exchange for Saturday 20th April, from 11 am till 1 pm. Among the agenda items for that meeting will be the second half of Mark's excellent demo on bases, and what we plan to do for the IMSS show in Dublin Castle at the end of May.

Must have missed this. Good to see the technique being spread out there. Credit where it's due Filip for showing it in the first place and for Mark for passing it along for everyone's benefit. :)

Good to hear that, Jason.

I am particularly looking foward to seeing the completed Memphis Belle.

I may bring along my little portable photo booth - it might even fit in it!

Pat - if you are coming, could you please bring along that old tablecloth of mine?

Thanks,

Philip

Excellent meeting, as always. Slightly less folks in attandance than usual - only 13 people made it.

However, the spread of models and kits on show were excellent. Thanks to Pat, I was re-united with my blue tablecloth (last seen at the IMSS 2012 show, kept
by John Schely in the meantime and handed over to Pat at a recent IMSS meeting). So the models could be seen and photographed, once again, on a
proper backdrop and not the usual table top markings of artistic doodlings and coffee cup stains. (I will iron it for the next time)

Vincent (Murfv) had just bought the new tool Airfix Typhoon (in 1/72nd), which we all managed to get a look at. The heavy panel lines, that were a
feature of the earlier Spitfire 1a, are no longer evident, and it looked very well detailed.

Posted Image

Sean (35th scale) gave us an up-close look at his diorama base - beautifully moulded. Should really pop out under a coat or two of paint and some weathering.

Posted Image

As promised, Jason brought along his finished "Memphis Belle" B-17, which was even better in the flesh than on this forum (and Britmodeller).

Posted Image

He also brought along his WIP Russian bear.

Sean (Alcatraz) brought his WIP 1/48th scale 109 - to much admiration around the table. That's looking well, Sean!

Posted Image

Ken had his Boston/Havoc WIP

Posted Image

There was also this nice WIP by James of an Acdemy F-15 in Soviet markings.

Posted Image

I'm sorry that I missed the others - there was a lovely motorbike by James, which can be seen in the background of the F-15 above, and in one
of the photos below.

But the main event of the day was the second part of Mark's demo on making bases. This time around, having made the base the previous month,
Mark showed us how to give a wood effect painting finish to the sides, using oil paints, which he then varnished, as well as providing a "grass" finish
to the top, and the addition of a soft material to the bottom of the base to level it up and prevent scratching tables, shelves etc when the base is laid down.

Here is a sequence of shots of his demo (sorry about the bad light in the first couple of them)...

And putting on the grass and base material:-

Once he had showed us how to do it, Mark passed around some examples for all to see and touch.

I later managed to take a shot of one of Don's WIP's on the completed base, to show what they will look like in practice.
(Don had another lovely silver civil airliner in 1/144th, of Soviet provence, I believe - you can see it to the left of the B-17 two shots
above. Sorry I missed it Don - looked lovely.

Many thanks, Mark, for all the work involved in providing this information to us all.

Vincent also had a bundle of old modelling mags which he was giving away for free. Thanks, Vincent.

We finished the meeting with some club business...... :zip:

Yep, it was a good meeting, great Demo from Mark, very interesting to see how relatively simple it is to put a good base together.

EDIT: Please note, the below trip is for IPMS Ireland members only. Thanks...

I assume by the 'club business' you mean the proposed trip to Baldonnel that Mark is very kindly setting up for us? We should put up a post with the details to see if anyone else from the Forum would like to go, and to keep track of dates etc.

Something actually occurred to me after the meeting about this trip. Mark said that he's agreed with Baldonnel that we'd go sometime either in May or June. But when the sheet went around at the meeting to help us pick dates, only June was listed. Was there a May sheet I didn't see? If not, can we maybe use this forum to get 3 or 4 dates picked (like Mark said), maybe two in May and two in June and then Mark can ask Baldonnel to see which of those dates suit them? Obviously personally I'd prefer May as my wife is due in June, but clearly I'll go with whatever suits the majority and if I can't make it then there's always next time.

I'll stick up a message in the 1:1 Scale Events forum...

Thanks...

J.
