As the topic description says - this is MY choice of photos from Telford 2012. (Others may have their own choices - I do know that Paul (Kolbe) Hurley took a shed load more than I did, with his super dooper cameras and lenses. However, if you want see my own take on this marvellous and world famous event, read on.....[and if you don't, well................move along.] The IPMS IRELAND stand was set up in mid afternoon on the Friday. When those of us from the Dublin Chapter (Paul, Steve and myself) arrived at about 4.20 pm from the ferry, Alan, Lindsay and Danny (from the Limerick Branch) had already been hard at work, and the bones of the display were already well in place. I added models of IAC planes that I had brought along from Ken and Paul, as well as some fine Aer Lingus historical models from Don (thanks, guys!). My own contribution (seeing as I had not finished that damn RS models Magister in time) was a series of banners/laminated posters with the slogan: "IPMS Ireland celebrates 90 years of the Irish Air Corps". These went down well, and justified our display. This anniversary was, after all, the reason that our hosts had provided double the normal allocation - four tables - for us for our display. As Alan correctly said - we had sufficient space to show our theme, without overcrowding. And this we did! These are some views of the IPMS Ireland club table, when completed just before the close on the Friday:- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alan's Walrus - complete with back-story A selection of IAC hurricanes (from various members) ![]() Ken's Magister ![]() Don's excellent Aer Lingus aircraft:- ![]() And this is part of the happy group that manned the table on behalf of the club. ![]() (photo taken by Paul. Left to right - myself, Danny, Alan and Lindsay) Others who also served their time for the club on the stand included Paddy McGannon, David O' Mahony and Barry Spencer on the Saturday. No doubt Alan, Lindsay or Danny can confirm who else served, or dropped in, on the Sunday, as Paul and I had to leave at 10 am that day (having been there from 8 am), to go on to Cosford and then on to Holyhead for the ferry home.... However, the IPMS Ireland stand was not the only one showing the pride of the Irish air force effort. Our good friends (and IPMS Ireland members), Gerry Carville and John Sheehan, had another display nearby, under the banner of the "Irish Aviation SIG". This is a long-standing SIG (Special Interest Group) within IPMS (UK), which has concentrated on Irish aviation. Gerry and John were, incidentally, instrumental in having our own club accepted into the family of IPMS national organisations as the sole independent national IPMS organisation for Ireland (rather than as a branch - the Four Provinces Branch - of IPMS (UK), which we had been previously). The display of Irish aviation on the SIG stand, which nicely complemented our own display, also deserves due mention:- ![]() Here is an overall view of the table, with John himself in the background. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And here is Gerry himself (complete with Irish tricolour and IAC roundel):- ![]() My next post (tomorrow!) will focus on the fact that we were only one of a number of tables in a part of Hall 3 set aside for what was a grouping of "foreign" chapters/clubs within the overall IPMS fold - what is generally known as the "Overseas Area". These consisted both of individual country IPMS clubs (such as Switzerland, Italy, France and Serbia) and chapters from other European countries (such as IPMS Berlin, who were our immediate neightbours), and a number of individual IPMS clubs/chapters from Poland, Belgium and Germany. My following posts will give a picture of what these overseas chapters/clubs were displaying at Telford. Some of their displays may, IMHO, give us pointers as to how or what we may show for our own club in future international (and indeed national) events. I will then conclude my thread with a series of posts of models in the competition, and a short selection of interesting models in some of the other SIG and club tables..... Enjoy! Philip |

. As promised, some more pics. These concentrate on the "Overseas Area", where various chapter and clubs from around Europe gather. Here is a general view, taken on the Friday, as most of the stands in this area of Hall 3 were setting up. Those in the foreground are an IPMS chapter from Cologne, who chose to call themselves the Pirates!. ![]() Some of the tables were national clubs (like ourselves), while others were individual chapters of their national organisations. Our immediate neighbours were one of the latter - IPMS Berlin. As might be expected, their stand was an example of order, with a glass edge along the front to keep the hands away. ![]() However, the table exhibited a number of very fine military dioramas:- ![]() ![]() ![]() A marvellous Millennium Falcon:- ![]() And also some aircraft. Of those, my attention was particularly drawn to a Dornier 335 Pfiel, just so Jason can see what others do with this "Luft '46" plane:- ![]() On the other side of our stand were the Italians. As might be expected, they showed a lot of design flair, what with high banners on either side, loads of colour and the flag:- ![]() I'm sorry to say that I didn't take any photos of their individual models, so I don't know whether they were Land Rovers or Humvees.....(sorry Sean!). Maybe Paul took some detailed photos here... Among the other notable stands were those of the Serbians. Their display covered the history of aviation in their country.... ![]() One useful idea on the Serbian stand was a card dispenser, with cards that you could pick up detailing their forum and website addresses..... ![]() And then there was the display by the Austrians, whose theme was the early pioneers of torpedo ships and submarine warfare during the American Civil War:- ![]() The models there were very interesting, if a little esoteric:- ![]() ![]() ![]() However, what many people commented on were their signs warning off people from touching their models:- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In other parts of the hall, the warning was, perhaps, expressed with greater humour:- ![]() Now that I am close to my limit for photos for this post, I will sign off...the next post will show further examples from the Overseas Area, including some memories of an iconic film from the late 1960's Philip |

One of my favourite displays in the Overseas Area came from IPMS France, which had a fascinating diorama of the inspection carried out by Luftwaffe General Kesselring, of the bomber force stationed in France during the Battle of Britain. The diorama noted that this was shown in the iconic late 1960's film of the Battle of Britain. This is the overall IPMS France stand:- ![]() And here is the diorama:- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also on the French table was this marvellous diorama, showing what happened to some Warsaw Bloc planes when they were no longer needed:- ![]() ![]() Probably the finest table covering came from this display (I think it was another German chapter):- ![]() And the table included this pair:- ![]() Other tables included this one from an individual chapter in Poland (note the banner below the table!) ![]() Complete with a display of the medals that its members had won in various competitions:- ![]() Other tables at the Overseas area were maybe a bit more modest, like the Swedes:- ![]() The Belgians:- ![]() And the Swiss:- ![]() Of course, the advantage of Telford is that you not only have the chance to enter the competition - congrats to Alan and Roy BTW - and to look at other models for inspiration (or envy!), but also to do a bit of shopping. This was Alan returning to the IPMS Ireland stand sometime during the Saturday, complete with a Hannants bag full of goodies:- ![]() And Paul certainly looked pleased with his purchase of a model of a more basic interest (or should that be Basic Instinct!):- ![]() Enjoy! Nice photos and a lot of inspiration. From what I can see - and saw during previous years, we have to step up our overall presentation. |

Well done one and all! |

Great photos Philip, your experience of attending SMW shows. My photos need a bit of work on them before I can publish. Also I really didn't help out on th stand, I was thre typical "first timer", had to see everything, know I came away with the feeling that I'd missed a lot andf was totally knackered on Saturday evening. I could bearly walk back to the hotel. But it was a fantastic show, fab organisation and the best was the introduction of the "wristbands". That made access so easy. The line into the kit-swap on Sat was the proverbial "mile long". Didn't get in there until late Sat. I have booked my accommodation for next year, just have to decide whether to drive or fly. Flying has an advantage - one can't buy soooo much. Great to have met all of you, look forward to meeting up again before SMW2013 |
