As requested, I have started this thread to show photos of D1 - the IPMS Ireland Nationals for 2011, that were held in Swords, Co. Dublin, on 2nd October 2011.

These photos are from a mixture of sources, including members of the club at the time, as well as some of the competitors and visitors to the show (who gave me
permission to use their photographs). I am more than happy to give citations to folks whose photos are on these threads - just send me a PM or an e-mail (my
e-mail addy is on the contacts page of the ipmsireland.com website).

Philip

First up are some general shots of the venue, showing the layout of the main club/competition area, and of some of the traders.

The main room, with the club tables to the left, and the competition tables to the right:-

Some other traders:-

Next up are some shots of the competition tables:-

lots of aircraft, both small and large:-

Posted Image

and quite a few cars (unlike other Nationals before and since):-
Posted Image

lots and lots of vehicles:-
Posted Image

and also a number of ships and dioramas:-
Posted Image

As the time for the start of the competition came, there were many modellers busy filling in their entry forms, while others were making sure their models looked their best:-
Posted Image

Apart from the club and competition tables, this particular event also found space for a huge display, by one modeller, of his extensive collection of kits:-

That's all for this post. The next one will feature a number of shots of the marvellous Best of Show, an ANT-20 by Yevgeniy Berbenitskiy, and some formal photos,
taken by Paul, of the prizewinners. The latter were sent on to the IPMS UK magazine, by request, where they were published.

The Best of Show at D1 was an entirely scratchbuilt model of an early Soviet airliner, the ANT-20, Maksim Gorkiy, done by Yevgeniy Berbenitskiy.

Here it is. I think you will agree that it definitely merited the award.

As I mentioned above, Paul "Kolbe" Hurley kindly agreed to take formal shots of some of the prizegiving, as the then IPMS (UK) magazine editor, John Tapsell,
had come along to the show, and had promised to cover it in a future edition of that fine magazine. True to his word, indeed he did. One of his colleagues,
Chris Ayre, who writes a column - focusing on the IPMS - in one of the commercial modelling magazines was there too. He also featured the Nationals, and
included a couple of these photographs as well. (The photos also allowed us to demonstrate that the Airfix kits that had been donated to the club as additional
prizes went to good homes).

Here is Yevgeniy receiving his award for Best of Show from Vincent Murphy (Murfv), then Chairman of the club:-

Posted Image

And here he is again receiving an award for the best aircraft model, also for the ANT-20:-

Posted Image

The Irish Aviation trophy went to Filip Servit (Fise) for his model of an IAC Marchetti:-

Posted Image

Filip himself is the sponsor (through his firm Mad Clown Design) for the Best Finish award, which was awarded for an immaculate model of a Ford
Roadster by Alan Powell:-

Posted Image

The new award in 2011 (and the main reason that John and his colleague Tony Horton - the Chief Judge at Telford - came over) was the IPMS (UK) Award
for the best model of a British subject. This award is sponsored by our UK colleagues. In 2011, it was awarded to Joe Maxwell, seen here receiving it from
John for his Meteor F4:-

Finally, John and Tony were the judges for the best club display - for the best display on one of the club tables - and I was lucky enough to get this
one, for the display of Bf 109's, from prototype to wars' end, that no doubt many of you will have seen at some stage....

My next posts on this thread will feature the models on the competition tables, and also some on the club tables.

So - on to the aircraft on the competition table.....There were 69 entries in the various aircraft classes at D1, out of the total of 184 entries overall....

These are some shots of the aircraft models on the table:-

Class A05 - the 1/72nd scale props:
Posted Image

Class A06 - their jet colleagues:-
Posted Image

Class A07 - modified props
Posted Image

Class A09 - the larger jets
Posted Image

Yes, it was getting a little crowded there, such was the interest in the competition. We had based the number of tables we needed
on the 2010 Nationals, but it soon became clear on the day that the number of entries far exceeded these modest expectations...

And here are some of the best of the individual aircraft entries(IMHO), apart from Yevgeniy's masterpiece, which I have covered above.

In the smallest scale, there was this little Tomcat, which won Jason Browne a Gold in class A03:-
Posted Image

and this was a lovely HP Heracles, also in 1/144th scale, which won Paul Hurley a Gold in class A01:-
Posted Image

Don Whittaker bagged a Bronze in the same class as Paul, for this "blast from the past" - a DC-3 in vintage Aer Lingus colours:-
Posted Image

and I myself managed a Silver, also in Class A01, for my postwar P-51C Mustang Racer:-
Posted Image

A Gold was also awarded to Roy Kinsella for this lovely 1/72nd scale Spitfire PRIX, in its characteristic "pink" camo scheme:-
Posted Image

Keeping with the Spitfire theme in the "one true scale" of 1/72nd, there were these lovely examples:-

Posted Image

Posted Image

Gold and Silver, respectively, in classes A05 and A07.

I'll finish this particular post with some more 1/72nd aircraft, done in Swiss Air Force colours by Roy Kinsella:-

The next post will look at some more of the props, including a few "heavies".

So - a couple of more aircraft.

Still in the props area, there were a number of larger planes. Here is a small selection:-

B-25 H by Alan Brislane
Posted Image

B-17 by Roy McKay
Posted Image

Another vintage Russian, an Ant-14, again by Yevgeniy
Posted Image

Some other smaller props included these fine offers, both by Jason:-
Posted Image

Posted Image
(The FW190 netted Jason a Gold in Class A10, and also the Trophy for the Best Kit Out Of the Box.)

this Buzzard, I think by Paul
Posted Image

this lovely pair of Sea Furies, by Stephen Nolan
Posted Image

and this Ju-87 Stuka, with its excellent camo job, also by Stephen
Posted Image

I will finish off this lot of props with this Lancaster diorama, built by Eryk Rawicz-Lipinski
Posted Image

I realise that those of you with more modern interests may be getting a little tired of all these props, so I will
cover some jets the next time.
