  • The scope of the campaign shall be from the night of June 5th, 1944 until the Liberation of Paris, 25th of August 1944. For your entry to be valid it must have been operated in Normandy during that time period.

thanks for opening this up sean
I don't think there will be too many rules

• open to planes, armour, vehicles, ships, figures and diorama

• I'm actually going to judge the winner on this one based on seeing entries in the flesh or in the gallery of completed builds

• going with anything used on or after the 5th of June to the liberation of Paris on the 25th of August.

• I will reveal the prize I'm putting up for this build once dermots nightfighter group build is finished( not long left so get your skates on)
ill add anything else I can think of here

Operation Cobra commenced on 25 July and is usually referred to as the Breakout from Normandy- could be the cut off point

or possibly the Liberation of Paris, 25 August 1944, is also sometimes considered as the end of the Normandy campaign.

I think I will be doing something with wings and stripes for this one(how original!! :D )

Cobra was what I was thinking originally but I want to see what the general consensus would be on it as I'm sure there are more knowledgable people on here than me

The 25th of august also coinsides with the end of the German retreat/breakout through the
Falaise gap. This event marked the end of German operations in Normandy. I like the Operation Cobra deadline but its quiet early on .

Well, none of my malarkey as a such, but in the initial general 'Proposal system' talk thread about the GBs, there has been said that:

'...there are some basic parameters; I intend to have four official group builds per year with each lasting three months...'

If that is of any help?

Well, none of my malarkey as a such,
That phrase is copy-righted!

The discussion on the dats is not how long the GB will last but what time period vehicles can be included in the GB....From D-Day to when? I can't imagine vehicles changes a whole lot over 2 or 3 months, but then it's not my era....

Cheers

Barry,

I, for one, would go for the dates to be June 5th till the start of Operation Cobra on 1st August 1944.

This was my post on the topic on the old forum last October:-

"I agree with Vincent. Can we take the D-day group build idea to be anytime from 5th June 1944 until the breakout from the bocage on 1st August 1944? That would allow for German armour, as well as German planes, plus of course the Allied landings, with tanks, vehicles and planes, the build-up to the break-out, and the US successes by July 31st under Bradley, in Operation Cobra.
Thus, those modellers who do figures, and ships, would also get a look in as well as those of us who favour aircraft or targets, thus covering all interests ...(well - except sci-fi and rotary wing.... (sorry, Paul))"

However, if others want it to go longer, to perhaps the end of August, I'm up for that. As Jason said in his post on the same thread:-

"Normandy Campaign : 6th June - 25th August (Liberation of Paris) or 30th August (last German unit retreats across the Seine)"

I'm happy with both end dates, as my planned entry is the rather unusual plane used in a rather historic visit to the beaches early in June by a rather "important" person!".....

However, it needs to start on June 5th, not June 6th, as the battle actually began with the parachute landings on the night of the 5th (A friend of my wife and I, living in Naas, is the niece of the Parachute Lt Colonel Terence Otway, who commanded the successful attack on the Merville Battery on 5th June, for which he was awarded the DSO. The French also awarded him the Légion d'Honneur in 2001).

Both the Fairey Swordfish and Albacore took part in ops during D-Day.

Wings with strings there....
