IMSS 2013; photos from the Riding School at Collins Barracks

Here is a selection of photographs from the IMSS show, on 25th/26th May 2013.

The event was moved from its usual home in Dublin Castle to Collins Barracks (something to do with some European Presidency, apparently....).
However, unlike in 2010, when the show was crammed into a couple of small rooms in the Museum, this time around the venue was the very
spacious Riding School in the grounds of Collins Barracks.

Posted Image

As usual, there were a number of people dressed up in military uniforms of bygone eras, from Roman times up to recent wars. No doubt these attracted attention
to the show from those members of the public visiting the adjoining Museum. The weather for the two days was glorious, so the re-enactors had ample time to sit
outside and shoot the breeze.....

Posted Image

Posted Image

The hall itself was one big space, well lit and with lots of room to walk around. The traders' tables were around the edges of the room, with the
competition tables in the centre.

Posted Image

Posted Image

As one entered, there was a registration table for the model competition. (As the venue is owned by the State, there was no entry charge for the event itself).

Posted Image

As in past years, we were very generously provided, through the IMSS Secretary, John Schley, with a table of our own amongst the traders. This allowed us to
show off some of our models to the passing public and other modellers, and also to publicise D2. This time around, we had a large banner, with the D2 flyer
printed on it.

Here is Ken, in situ, early on the Saturday morning.

Posted Image

The models on display came from Ken McFarlane, Don Whittaker, Pat McGrath, Sean Mullarkey, and myself, as well as two fine busts from Karl.

Posted Image
(these are the selection from Ken)

Posted Image
(this is Don's great DC3, in early Aer Lingus markings from 1946, together with Karl's busts)

Posted Image
(my contribution of five 1/72nd planes, with Pat's Gold medal winning Ork bust from 2012 behind)

(Sean brought two military vehicles and a small figure vignette later on during the day on Saturday)

The IPMS Ireland stand became our base for the two days, as we forayed out to see the traders. Among them was our own Steve Munsell, doing a
roaring trade with his excellent Value Gear stowage sets.

Posted Image

Walshie was there, of course, with a very large stand. Sean (Alcatraz) was doing duty there on the Saturday.
Jason was spotted on the Sunday scanning the stock for some bargains.......

Posted Image

Apart from Walshie, and a number of other traders who are familiar faces at the IMSS shows, selling things like bases, "name it" nameplates and
figures, there were stands from Diarmuid Byrne of Irish Transport Books and Models, Joe from the Modellers Nook in Belfast, and new traders unknown to me.
One that caught my eye was this gentleman, selling antique / collectable kits, some even older than me!

Posted Image

Our stand was also useful on the Saturday morning, as members brought out their kits for the competition and filled in their entry cards.
It also served as a useful "temporary repair bay", when some kits destined for the competition suffered damage on the way and had
to be fixed up before entering.

Posted Image

(I'm glad to say that Gerry's Lancaster was successfully repaired, and (deservedly) won a medal.)

The judging itself took up most of the Saturday afternoon, with pairs of judges huddled for many hours going through all of the kits in contention.

Posted Image

My next couple of posts will show some of the models in the competition. But I will sign off this particular post with a model that won the President's prize for Keith
Donnelly (who was also a re-enactor) for this absolutely marvellous diorama of Blessington Street, showing part of the outside of Walshie's shop, complete with Charlie
enjoying a fag and a cuppa on the step outside. For those who have ever ventured up there, this is soooo true to life. A worthy momento of the Dublin modelling scene in 2013...

Some more photos, in no particular order. First a few more aircraft, and then the other genres.
(I don't know who the modellers were for these, but there were some cracking models and dioramas on the competition table.)

Will do, but it will have to be this evening, as I cannot use photobucket here at work.

It was a very good weekend.

The American Spitfire and the FW 190 on the mirrors are by Chris Spalding from Belfast who has promised to come down to D2 in October.
The Me 110 and Me 109 dios are I think by Gerry (Merlin)

The Millenium Falcon and the Rat bust were by Terry Burke

The AtSt was by Glen Phelan Junior :)
The two big boats were by Charlie Bryant
and the abandoned Citroen 2CV is also by Chris Spalding

I thought I could hear more Belfast accents at the show! I must say Chris' Citroen was a tour de force- the weathering job was very much worthy of the special AK award and the base he had for it was perfect.

By the way- on the aircraft tables there was a particularly fetching big F-14 in black with a Playboy Bunny symbol on the rear wing- does anyone know who's work it was?

Karl - thanks for the info - Chris did a marvellous job with that Citroen entry - well meriting the AK prize for weathering. (IMHO, he should also have got a gold for it, in its class).

Not sure about that F-14 - Playboy bunnies....mmmm

Is that a real marking or another silly "what-if"? Nice work on the kit, though, perhaps merited a gong of some sort for that alone....

Still - why Playboy? Surely there are better markings one could choose? If Revell are doing this OOB, then all that one can think is - why do they bother....?

It's an actual camouflage and marking scheme used by U.S Navy air squadron VX-4 (Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Four) nicknamed 'The Evaluators'. Their squadron badge, for whatever reason, had a Playboy bunny on it and so the scheme on the plane was probably a bit of fun for them.

Re: the Black Bunny. VX-4 have been using this marking since they tested and evaluated Phantoms. These markings have also been used on Hueys and A-6's and are currently used on the current F-18 Test and Evaluation squadron.
Here's a good reference picture for those interested enough: http://www.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=http://fullcolorbirds.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/f14-photo-vx4-01xl11.jpg&imgrefurl=http://fullcolorbirds.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/grumman-f-14-tomcat-vandy-one/&h=738&w=1062&sz=78&tbnid=c_EaDVfwykT1SM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=130&zoom=1&usg=__wXQ8QfWnyTcYDqnorfMuovRZUAU=&docid=Or3TL52RxAqxCM&sa=X&ei=8Q-mUYCSEMaf7AaQv4GwBw&ved=0CDkQ9QEwAg&dur=2480

There's also a toned-down Grey Bunny scheme. :)

Thanks to everyone for the info about the Black Bunny- thats straight on my to-do list for my next F-14.

Incidentally Tamiya 's old 1/35 M48A3 Patton tank had white Playboy Bunny decals included in the box- I believe there are a good few pictures of tanks in Vietnam sporting the Bunny.

Philip- I thought Chris did get a Gold for the Citroen? :O ! Was it a Silver or something else?

Karl

Apparently not - he only got a commended in the civilian class for it, but did get a special prize, of a bundle of stuff from AK, for the best weathered entry for it as well.

At least that's what he has said over on the ISM forum:-

http://irishscalemodeller.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1588&start=20

Personally, I thought the Citroen was worth a gold or a silver, but then I wasn't judging there.
