Hi all, Any interest in a club presence/display at this show over the October Bank Holiday weekend? I know it's only a couple of weekends after D2 but we should be all recovered by then.. While primarily a model train show, they do have 'hobbies' on their promotional flyer! The venue is Blackrock College, Booterstown, Co Dublin and i've put the details in the events calendar as well. Dermot - I was at a similar one a couple of months ago, and it seemed to be all collectors of dinky toys and such like, as well as lots of railway stuff. I'd imagine that we could man a table there, but only if we got it for free. I don't think it would be worth coming if we had to pay for the table If you know/know of the organisers, then it would be great if you could suss that aspect out. Philip |

Exhibitors are, usually, for free, traders and visitors will pick up the bill... Dermot, our Branch - Limerick / Shannon - will not attend, as I feel that this is a local show and, as such, should be on the agenda of local Branch, rather than make it an official 'Club event'. After our experiences with local Diecast and hobby shows, over the years, it is a good place to be. There's plenty of them around and new shows are popping out all the time, the majority of visitors have no interest in plastic modelling and you'll get many enquiries of 'how much for that' type. Many people would not even know what the hell is that 'kit' and you'll get plenty of grabbers on these events too, as there are many small kids and some pretty thick adults - escents /great fun with those though, you can pretend that you are in some weird indie movie/, but you will pick-up some interest from all, ex-modellers, active modellers and modellers returning to hobby after some years. I would advise though, to choose a few of the best ones and stick to those, it could be a waste of time and resources otherwise. Good luck with this one. |

It's the biggest model railway show held in the country and has been held for over the last 20 years at least. There will be active layouts and displays there. Most of the people there will know what a kit is and a fair few will have started on the good old Airfix railway kits. Any children and adults there will be perfectly aware of how fragile a model can be and will keep hands back if advised to do so. Every year that the shop has gone, we bring a supply of kits with us and few if none return. Very sorry for the rant guys. |

No problem with the rant, Simon.....but then you are selling generally railway stuff, as I saw from the VERY BIG Marks Models stand at the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown railway society show (which was otherwise excellent....if you are interested in railway layouts, that is). In light of our experience, at Salute in particular, not every child, nor indeed every adult, seems to be aware of "how fragile a model can be", nor will they "keep hands back if advised to do so." However, if it is in the best interests of plastic modelling, we will try once again. Philip Edited by Alcatraz, Sep 18 2013, 10:26 AM.

Gentlemen, I think it's fair to say that busy hands, overly curious children and ignorant adults will always be a facet of our club experience. We shouldn't allow it to put it off potential shows though we'd never leave home. I also believe there is no harm in considering local shows as a 'branch operation'. I wouldn't expect the Cork Branch to travel across the country for a small train show in Blackrock that is easily covered by Dublin. Just as the Cork Branch wouldn't expect Dublin members to travel for a small show there. That's the beauty of branches, local representation.

That's exactly what I meant, Sean. I wonder how many Dubs would travel to Ennis, Limerick, Charleville and so on every 2nd month to take part in some local hobby show. As long as there is no other Branch nearer, Limerick / Shannon Branch is responsible for this geographical area of Munster and we don't expect and don't ask other club members to travel on those events. That wouldn't be fair and economically viable. Edited by Alcatraz, Sep 18 2013, 10:27 AM.

Many thanks, Dermot, about your suggestion of a "club presence/display" at this forthcoming show in Blackrock. I have to say that I'm not sure that it's worth my effort - I have been heavily involved in trying to promote the national organisation all through the last number of months, first at Aviation Ireland at ALSAA in December last (and for the previous 3 years there), then the IMSS show, then the railway show in Stillorgan, then the show up in Lisburn at the UAS, and then Salute. Thanks anyway, Philip Edited by Prenton, Sep 18 2013, 07:42 AM.

Hi all, Just to say I've got a reply back on this show - have posted it as a new topic on the Club Branch section, as that seemed like the best place for it. Best regards, Dermot Edited by Dermot, Sep 25 2013, 12:03 AM.
