Yes, that's right. I am starting a thread about Scale Model World 2014!

This event was the focus of some discussion at the last Dublin Chapter meeting, and a number of folks were already talking about going next November.

One of the issues that arose was the (quite significant) cost of hotels adjoining the venue.

Vincent (murfv) mentioned that he had found the rooms in the University of Wolverhampton Telford campus, where he stayed this year, to be very acceptable, and a LOT cheaper. (You do need access to a car to stay there, as it is about 2 miles from the SMW venue).

The University has just put up bookings for 2014 - the cost is listed as £38 per night, including English breakfast. That compares with the B & B per night cost of £97 in the Holiday Inn, for example.

Here is the link:-

http://www.estore.wlv.ac.uk/browse/product.asp?compid=1&modid=1&catid=311

If you are sure you are going to SMW 2014, and want to go for this option, then it might be worth thinking about booking soon......

I have just booked my accommodation - 3 nights at £38 per night - for a total of £114. Very good value. Vincent (murfv) stayed there last year.

I reckon that the cost cannot be beaten - the hotels beside the show cost upwards of £80 per night. So, by my reckoning, that about £100 that I can set aside for buying kits, paints and accessories at SMW... :-"

Anyone else on the forum made any definite plans for Telford at this stage?

Philip,

We are all booked into the HI Friday to Monday. We did as we do every year and book next year

as we check out the current show. However things are filling up faster each year So I booked 2015

last month and may ring back for 2016. ^o)

If anyone is out in the sticks this year without transport if you give me a ring early Sat/Sun

i.e. Before the bar opens, I will happily go over and pick you up.

Bye the bye we are all safely booked into the Pearse with a nice IPMS discount

regards

Folks - got my confirmation on Friday from the Univ about the Telford accommodation.

Looks fine, but it seems that maybe the breakfasts are not the same as last time. This is what the guy said:-

"You have been booked in for 3 nights stay on a Bed & Breakfast basis for the Fri 7th, Sat 8th and Sun 9th November 2014
Please note we do not offer a self-catering service any more. We offer Go Deli café located by reception is open Monday to Friday (excludes Bank Holidays) for light snacks and drinks, opening times vary. There are vending machines for food and drinks in Go Deli, which is open all the time. Across the main car park at the rear of the University, there is a Co-op shop, chemist and cash point. There are two pubs/restaurants immediately by the University, the Red Lion Pub and the Flaming Grill in Priorslee. Otherwise you could try eating out in Telford town centre, Shifnal, Ironbridge or slightly further a field is Shrewsbury."

Not absolutely clear, as you can see. Maybe Vincent can clarify, as he was there before??

Still, as it is only £38 a night, I'm happy - a few extra quid for a full breakfast, if all that is available on site is "light snacks" or a vending machine, isn't a particular problem, as compared to the cost of the hotels nearer the SMW venue. Still lots of savings, as compared to hotel costs, which of course can be spent with the SMW traders..... :-"

Philip

Anyone else made a booking yet????

I'm booked in to the University for the Friday and Saturday nights.

I plan on driving over on the Friday. Probably in my Nissan X-Trail which has a lot of room if anyone wants anything brought over or brought back.

Others may be going. Mark? Alan and Lindsay? Anyone else??

Three of us are going over in Simon's car on the Friday, so could carry over stuff for the comp. What are the rules re the comp - do you have to pre-register, and can others enter stuff in the comp for you if you have their registration details, or does everyone entering have to come themselves?

As one of the most experienced chief judges, I'm sure you know the answer offhand.
Thanks,

philip

I can partly answer that. Last year I filled in the entry form online and was sent the entry card by email. Vincent took my entry over and place it and the card on the table.

As Pat said already:
It's the same rule as in IPMS Ireland competition, modeller himself doesn't have to be present, but models have to be entered under his/hers name. The organiser will have all the details of the models in their database, from online registry, so one, simply, has to drop the model accompanied with appropriate entry card on the table in competition area.

That's fine, Pat.

If you want, we can take over your competition entries, to save any hassle on the plane. As Paddy says, bring something for the comp....
